I am a new CTD owner with my used 2000 2500 5-Spd totally stock except for a 5th wheel hitch in back.

After reading many of the posts on the website, I've noticed that one of the most common problems that people complain about is the Lift Pump going bad. I don't know if I am just getting jumpy, but I seem to think that I have lost the edge on my power lately, and I wonder if it has something to do with the fuel pump. I think that I need a little bit of help:

1) How can I diagnose if I am actually having a problem with the pump, or if it is just my imagination.

2) Could someone tell me some troubleshooting issues with the pump (including where to find it ;-) )

and, most importantly,

3) If something goes wrong with it in the near future, how should I go about replacing it. I'm not afraid to work on my truck, but I don't know much about the layout yet, unfortunately.

Thanks so much.

New driver to the family, but lovin' every minute of it... .

Welcome aboard! If you do a forums search under "fuel pressure" or "lift pump", you'll have more than enough reading. Alot of guys are adding fuel pressure gauges on their 24v's to keep an eye on it.

At the very least you should borrow/buy a fuel pressure tester that hooks up to the schrader valves on your fuel filter and injection pump. That way you can check the pump at regular intervals. BriarHopper on this site sells one. Thy also come in some of the Banks kits if you happen to know anyone so equipped.

Ultimately a permanent gauge is better, if your lift pump fails $150), and isn't replaced soon, your injection pump will be overworked and ultimately fail also($1000++).

Thanks for all your help. I wondered if someone could tell me (in laymens terms) WHERE to find the pumps in question... Both the Lift pump and the injection pump.

Lookin forward to getting my hands dirty!

These might help......

At our recent dyno event someone had a bad motor on a pallet. It was a good opportunity to take some clear pics of several items. These are from the drivers side of the motor. Hope it helps.

Oh I think this was a 98. 5 or 99 motor. You may have a different fuel filter.

I wouldn't let it bother me too much. For every one that has problems, there are those that don't. They are definitely prone to failure, but are easy to fix and not hard to diagnose with a fuel pressure gauge. I have 75,000 miles miles on my original lift pump. It is weak, but I keep an eye on my fuel pressure to make sure I am not starving the injection pump. I cruise on the highway 90% of the time and I can usually maintain 7 psi at all times

Kurz82,

I tried responding to your PM but apparently it didn't go through.

Briar Hopper is the correct screen name. The one I gave earlier shows nothing on search. Try the new on members list. His website is

www.blackmountaindiesel.com

All the info you need is on these to sites.

HTH,
