Howdy All…I just bought my first CTD (1050 miles) in fact, this is the first diesel I’ve ever owned. It’s a Silver 3500 automatic 4x4 SWB. I have a few questions about my new truck. I know these are going to sound stupid to you diesel pros but, hey, I’ve driven gas pushers my whole life. Ok, on to my questions: My truck runs about 2000 rpm at 70 mph is that what it is suppose to? Next, when I am driving around the Oil Pressure stays at about 40 or a little higher when on the interstate, but when I come to a stop it drops down, not into the red, but it drops to the lower black line. Lastly, what kinda of mileage can I expect to get when the engine is broke in? I am currently getting 15 mpg with just over 1000 miles on it.

Congratulations on your new truck. Of course, I think you made a wise buy.

If I multiply my speedo reading by 30 I expect to get very my RPM's, so I think you are OK there.

Your oil gage is not "real". It's just kind of a virtual gage. Your pressures seem normal to me.

Your fuel mileage will mostly be determined by your driving habits. My experience is that to do really well (22 or so) you'll have to stay under 70, or maybe less depending on load, wind, hills, etc.

Check out some of the threads on break-in! Don't baby it or you'll never get it done.

Good luck.

You be right in the strawberry patch with those readings. A 4X2 with the 3. 73 rear end should run at 2000RPM at 72MPH. I know mine does because I got pulled over by Oklahoma State Trooper last week for doing 72 in a 60. He wrote me up a nice... "courtesy warning" and never even approached my truck; he called me back to his Camaro and never asked about my proof of insurance. Those are obviously the benefits of driving a CTD. If I was in a Powerstroke or Duramax I'd probably have been thrown in jail. I was also traveling with two long guns (unloaded) and a loaded revolver under the console.

The oil pressure is fine as long as it is between the min/max tick marks. In fact, I'd worry more about higher oil pressure when the engine is cold than lower oil pressure at operating speeds.

Your MPG will fluctuate within a fairly wide range, but my 4X2 consistently averages just below 18MPG without me trying to maximize it. I've gotten as high as 21MPG over 500 miles and as low as 15. 7MPG.
