So bought a new lift pump today from the local kenworth dealer 92. 61$. I got it home gettin ready to put it in and took a closer look at it and lone and behold cast in the side it says made in china. This is some crap I bought the cummins pump because I didn't want a cheap knock off. #@$%!#@$%!

So I guess I am going to take it back cause I'm not gonna put that crap in my truck then have to change it in six months.

I have seen some pumps out there made by flag which is german so I've heard. What pumps have you guys used and had good success with no ticking noise good pressure?

Thanks

I've never had one that didn't tick... last one I installed was from the local injection shop. don't even remember where it was made. truck made 535rwhp and is still ticking 2yrs later! (literally)

Yea mine ticks know but has good pressure so I guess I am just gonna leave it. I have heard some guys say the slop could wear the cam lobe prematurely.

Anythings possible, but the "lobe" for the fuel pump isn't really a lobe, it's an eccentric. There is no radical slope there to wear. Mines been ticking off and on for 200K miles. It ticks louder when I need to change my fuel filter. ;)

That is SAD! It is times like that when the aftermarket is a better choice than the OEM. Put the chinese made one on there and it will fail for sure. I think you can get a kit to rebuild the pump. Or, get an aftermarket one. Mine ticks too. 220,000 miles on the ole truck. It ticks less with the 50% veg oil blend, more when it's hot outside.

Yall may also be disgusted at the OEM fuel shutdown solenoids. They are made by Woodward in china. Same company also makes them in china for Perkins! Yep, they are just as prone to fail on the forklifts with the Perkins engine as they are on our Cummins. Knock on wood, my original one is still holding up but the boot is gone. Mine is made in Germany. The one on my 98 work truck is made in china!

SICKENING crap right there!

I used a mtn. bike innertube for a new boot on my fuel shutdown solenoid cut it to length and zip tie it on. Its better than 26$ they want for a new one. it seems like it works just as good its there just to keep the crud out. My solenoid looks original also so hopefully it lasts.

It seemed od to me that the price of lift pumps has come down since I was searching old threads but know it all make sense there cheaper to buy for cummins so they lowered the price. These days nothing ever comes down in price.

I did return the pump. I wanted to tell them I didn't want there chinese piece of crap but I resorted to just telling them it was the wrong pump so they didn't give me any flack on the return.

You might be able to still get a Carter pump from an IH/Case tractor dealer. I got one there a few years ago, but only because they beat the Cummins dealer just up the road by $20. You will have to change one fitting from the old pump to the new.

If you use the chinese pump park the truck well away from your house - it may result in increased lead levels in your children and poison your pets!!;)

I found a carter pump on rockauto.com but they want 180 they also have a pump from airtex which I think is made in IL. Autozone also sells airtex and napa usually sells federal mogul/carter stuff but I will have to give them a call.

I did do some fuel system work last weekend bypassed the fuel heater completely and replaced the soft lines at the engine this really helped how the truck starts it fires off alot quicker know. I ended up taking the inlet fitting off the lift pump and cutting the half inch flare off and welding a stainless 1/4 pipe fitting to it with some 309 rod which is good for mild to stainless welds. This will be nice cause then I can thread a pipe to AN fitting into the pump and run AN fittings when I upgrade the fuel filter.

Seems like when I stretch the overflow valve spring the ticking stops so I have a new one on the way. The idle pressure is kinda high with the spring stretched so hopefully a new one will make a change.
