Any word on what kind of mileage that thing would produce? I feel any progress on the diesel front takes the whole idea forward; I'm eager to see this engine in action!

Pretty interesting... Pretty pricy too... Maybe something like this (high end - glitzy) will convince the American public that diesels are good and will promote diesel engine production for all cars.

Volkswagen has announced production plans for their new diesel engine... and you better sit down for this one: V10, 5. 0 liters, twin turbos and intercoolers... 313hp @ 4000rpm and 553ft/lbs of torque!! Instead of a normal 72 degrees between cylinder banks, VW is using 90 degrees to get the motor shorter and lower in the vehicle... . oh yeah. . it's ALL aluminum!

Dont forget that the rest of the entire planet runs on diesel! You can buy ABSOLUTELY ANY VEHICLE with a turbo diesel and stickshift... anywhere in the world, except the US. Ive even seen a t. d. Jeep Cherokee with a stick! High-end luxury cars like MB and BMW and Alfa... all with diesels. Have read that, with the soaring gas prices, VW is selling a ton of tdi cars lately. (they are the ONLY diesel passenger car sold in the US), and perhaps, when the 'general population' sees that they aren't slow, or stinky or smokey, they just may start to ask about diesels at their dealerships... one can only hope America catches up with the rest of the world. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.

Maybe we need to keep this diesel thing a secret.
If the rest of America finds out that diesels are the way to go, the oil companies may "develop a shortage of diesel fuel" (Like heating oil in winter, and gasoline/electricity in summer) so they can rip US off. #ad

Darn VW TDIs--there is a specific allotment that VW sells here in the US, and when they're gone, they're gone. I have been to a few VW lots and can NEVER find a TDI. Thought it would be fun to try one but no such luck #ad

If the new VW TDI is anything like the ones they have out now they will have something. I just bought a VW NB TDI 3-12-01. If you have not drove one you are in for a surprise. I only have about 5500 on it,best mileage so far was 52+and that ats 70-75. Just changed oil at 5000 and put Amsoil 5W30 in. Go drive one and see what I'm talking about.

Actually Tim, the aluminum heads should be fine since they're on an aluminum block... the thermal expansion rates will coincide nicely... and with the super-deep pockets VW has for R&D, I'm sure it's gonna be right, straight out of the box! We only see a few of the vehicles/motors that they produce... like a 5 cylinder and 6 cylinder turbo diesel! In the gas dept. , VW will offer a W-8 (yes, W not V) in the Passat, and a new V-12 for an up-comming luxo-barge that will rival BMW and Mercedes. This V-10 diesel is an optional motor in that luxo car. . dubbed the D-1.

This aluminum head diesel thing is here to stay and is going to be the future, I'm betting. I've seen smaller Isuzu aluminum headed/cast iron block diesels on generator sets which are holding up very nicely.

I just found out that VW is not allowed to sell the TDI in New York. Guess who's going out of state to but one next year!
