If the brake light stays on, isn't it possible the brakes are also staying on causing excessive heat and brake wearing? When my truck was brand new the caliper stuck on the left front. When I stopped to see what was wrong the brake was smoking badly. I let it cool down and then started to driving to my dealer for repairs. I stopped several times to make sure the brakes were not getting hot and I noticed that the brake light was on. I pulled up on the brake peddle and the light went off. Anyhow, I took the truck to the dealer and they replaced the brake pads and caliper. A few months later I had a problem with my 5th wheel camper brakes. The caliper piston froze up in the out position and the brake got so hot it caught on fire. I almost lost the camper. It is really hard to stop a brake fluid fire when the brakes are red hot. The fire department just arrived in time to get the fire out before it spread to the trailer body. Just wondering if these problems were caused by the items identified in this recall. My truck was manufactured in December 2009.

Yup. Electric trailer brakes go off the brake switch and an inertial sensor in the controller. Activation of the brake switch alone will give the trailer a light brake application, inertia increases the current to the magnets on the trailer brake.

EDIT - I re-read your post and presume that you are electric over hydraulic on the trailer. Same principle applies.

Thanks Sag2 I tried it with the cap removed. There just seems to be a second or so delay when letting go of the brake pedal and the brake lights shutting off. Must be normal.
