Here we go on the same old spin. VP44-ECM,lift pump, ect. This is my story. I recently picked up a 98. 5 . 240K on the clock. Shortly after getting it I had all the symptoms of VP44 failure, hesitation, white smoke, sometimes poor start + all the codes. Installed a new lift pump and hoped but NO. So I ordered a bluechip pump and installed it,and put the setting back to stock from where the prior owner had set them with the super chip programmer (not a super chip fan myself). All good for about 200 miles then I got a check engine, crank position sensor, companion, over voltage ? Ran perfect so I cleared codes and all seemed ok. Power sucks but I figured it was a little tired and I am used to my past 03 that had been modified. About 600 miles later tach goes flat- check engine, codes are over boost, crank position, and something else. The tach only stayed flat for a minute if that when this happened. Againg this same thing happened about 100miles later. Then yesterday I get dead pedal, and white smoke along with poor running on start up. Get a check engine and I get 1594,1693,0336,0234. Humm - call doug at Bluechip and he suspects ECM ? Maybe a crank position sensor (which was replaced less then 10K ago), and or Map sensor. I have no one to swap a ECM with to trouble shoot that. A map was somewhat affordable, so I ordered a Map from Genos yesterday. I am struggling with what to do here. I can not afford to invest $800 into a ECM repair if it is not the issue, and dont know where to send mine if I do need it fixed. Can anyone advise me on this ? I am really in a pinch, I need my truck for the obvious reasons plus I need to make a journey to see a new grand baby due in two weeks up in Wisconsin (Im in Colorado). I am really at a loss and somewhat frustrated but still hopeful.

SYMPTOM

P-0234 TURBO BOOST LIMIT EXCEEDED (OBDII)

WHEN MONITORED

Ignition on.

SET CONDITION

Engine Speed > 2200 RPM , No intake air pressure sensor out of range DTC's present.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Wastegate mechanical failure

Wastegate stuck

Check the wastegate to make sure it is not stuck, and that there is a plain old barbed hose elbow coming off the compressor housing, not a "Boost" elbow.

SYMPTOM

P-0336 CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL

WHEN MONITORED

Engine running.

SET CONDITION

The crankshaft position sensor indicates no engine speed or position signal to ECM.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

DTC not = To freeze frame DTC

Ckp sensor ground circuit open

Ckp wiring harness intermittent defect

5-volt supply circuit open

5-volt supply circuit shorted to ground

Ckp sensor signal circuit open

Ckp sensor signal circuit shorted to ground

Crankshaft position sensor def

Engine control module defective

That one has a long trouble shooting tree. I'd pull the Crank Sensor and make sure the tone wheel bolted to the crankshaft has not come loose. If the CKP sensor has any scratches or scoring on the face, there's your immediate indicator.

SYMPTOM

P-1594 CHARGING SYSTEM VOLTAGE TOO HIGH

WHEN MONITORED

With the ignition key on and the engine speed greater than 0 RPM .

SET CONDITION

When the PCM regulates the generator field and there are no detected field problems but the voltage output does not decrease.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

Generator field driver circuit short to ground

BTS defective

Generator shorted

PCM defective (charging system voltage high)

PCM defective (battery temperature sensor)

PCM defective (charging system)

No trouble at this time

Verify that your Alternator is putting out 12. 5v - 14. 5v. ~ NOTE - A collapsed battery can cause the Alt to overcharge. Been there, done that.

Your codes if they were pointing to a control module, are pointing to both the ECM, and the PCM. 1 mechanical failure and 2 potential electrical or control module failures.

Simple things first, check and clean battery connections and all the ground points, and all the connections for the accused components. Alternator, Crank Sensor, ECM and PCM, Make sure there are no pinched or rubbed through wire harnesses.

PM me your location in CO. I might be able to help you with diagnosing if you are close enough.
