Bully Dog question?

Just installed some of Don's 80 horse EDM's and all I can say is WOW! I used to run bully dog II's and these are completely different. I used to have way too much smoke and no low end to spool the turbo so driving in town was awful. Now, I can drive without babying it, it moves when I want it to, and my engine runs much smoother. There is no smoke unless I want it to and throttle response is excellent. The mid-range was also much improved as it feels much quicker and I don't get choked out when I go into OD in 4th. It feels a little stronger at WOT but I lost at least 150* on the pyro. I'm not trying to down the other injectors... . it did not seem that others were having the problems that I was having with them, but these new ones are like a whole different breed. Don definately has his stuff together on these. Also, I want to thank Merrick at Laredo Performance Diesel for putting up with me and doing whatever it takes to get my truck like I want it.

Good report, Adam. Curious as to what criteria/thought process you used to select the Mach 2's, rather than 2. 4's or 3's, given the other bombs you have which seems you could have gone bigger.

thanks

Edit: My mistake. Don M's site says the 80 hp are Mach 1. 5

That's a good question 24V. Truth is, I was actually skeptical about how much the new ones would actually reduce smoke. I never would have thought there would be this much difference. I'm happy with my power level now and I have no smoke, just what i wanted, but if I knew then what I know now I'd have gone bigger. But hey... ... no one said I'm done yet!

My M3's will be here and more then likely installed Thursday. Am looking for more low end spool (even though it's pretty good now w/ the DD3's) and some more top end (even though it's decent now w/ the DD3's). I guess I just needed something new to play with and M3's looked to be the way to go.

If they reduce my smoke, I'll be happy, but if they don't, I'll be happy. If my EGT's stay the same, I'll be happy, if they go up at WOT, I'll be happy as long as they're about the same at cruise.

Hopefully they get rid of my "mid-range" lag that I have right now at this high altitude at low boost... that is my main goal, and if they solve some of that problem am probably going to try the standard housing for my B1.

another question....

thanks.

If you've had them in long enough, what comp level do you run for everyday driving, or do you just run on the injectors? I'm thinking of EDM's and would like to duplicate/equal my present level 3 performance hoping Mach 2's, 2. 4's or... . doubt it, 3's would allow me to run the box at level 1 to reduce strain on the VP. I'm hoping my PDR Nasty Nine HY and cam would give me some wiggle room on going to hotter injectors and still being able to control temps and smoke.

24V,

This depends on where most of your daily driving occurs. I can drive in any level up to 3X5 in town or out without having to worry about any smoke,FP,or Temp problems at all. That's all well and good but on the way home (about 90 miles) I drove with the box off and when I got to thinking about it, it runs much harder than it did when I was running my EZ all through the RPM range. I also noticed on a big bridge that I could only get the pyro to hit just a hair over 1000* with my foot on the floor for about 15-20 seconds. When I put the box on 1X5, the power felt like it was almost doubled. It's kind of hard to justfy it at first but if you think back to when you had stock power this is a huge increase, all of the mods just spoil you into thinking that it's normal. Hope this helps.

I run my truck mostly on 1x1 in town to control smoke but i use it to control the smoke on low boost situations not because the injectors make excessive smoke. With the box of it barely smokes at all unless i put my foot in it till the turbo spools, but even then the cloud is not obnoxious. This is around 4700-5000' elevation. I noticed that down in the Willamette valley and Portland they hardly smoke at all even on 1x5. But on 5x5 they'll stop traffic no matter the elevation.

Josh you'll love the M3's but I'd reccomend going to the standard B1 housing because around here my 40 only adequate for supplying enough air IMO.

Here is a copy of a thread that a friend of mine did with the results after I installed his Mach 2. 5's. . And also it shows his signature of his truck. .

Well...

They're as good as I remember, but cleaner running. They drive just like my DD2's, but with alot more mid range punch. The acceleration from 30mph to 70+ is stunning. The smoke is about the same as DD2's, maybe a little less. With the TST box on level 3, I can hit 1400 degrees, then it drops. On levels 6-9, I see 1600 before it drops, but the turbo is keeping up. If you want that immediate sports car like acceleration, these EDM's are the ticket. For edification, I've run rv275's, DD2's, EDM mach 2's, back to rv275's for awile, and now these new & improved EDM mach 2. 5's. These new ones run clean enough to keep the smoke police off my back here in Ca. .

What GatorRam said. Based on a conversation that I had today, I guess I am running Don's Mach 2. 39, anyhow 110hp. I,m not exactly sure how Don's numbering system works, but what the hey, they work great. I moved up from DD2's which I also liked but these have way more low end, smoke less and plenty on the top end. I too, run 99. 99% of the time with my drag comp off but even when I turn it on just 1x1, my truck is like another whole beast. My thinking is to save the VP44 from extra duty cycles if not needed. So then, you may ask, why then do I have a drag comp box at all and not just an EZ? My response to that would be, "because I can" and I have it for the power if I NEED it or WANT it.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the kind words, really appreciated.

I think once we get your truck finished up, it will be an awesome daily driver, and a Serious PowerStroke Killer.

I'll give you a call later today about that turbo, shipping, etc.

Thanks,

Merrick

i read in the latest TDR a man say one thing they learned on their diesel dragster fuel atomization is more important than mass quantities. it seems that don may have the best atomization based on the reports i have seen on this board and things i have read.
