My dealer advised that the truck I ordered one month ago is on restriction due to all orders will have the dreaded plumbing. I told him I didn't want the truck with the UK results. He advised settling for a lot truck. My dealer has a very limited selection. Anyone have any other info on the early start of the EGR motor? Thanks, Doc

In my opinion, EGR=bad. Here's why:

-Raises underhood temperatures considerably.

-Vastly increased complexity. Think about it... EGR cooled by engine coolant!

-Greatly increased problems with coking your intake manifold.

And here's the good things about EGR:

-Reduction in combustion temperatures.

Doc, your profile doesn't show your location, so I don't know if my comment will do you any good but... . You can go to Dodge.com and do dealer inventory searches down to the window sticker level. For any five star dealership. You don't HAVE to buy from your local dealer. Any dealer will be happy to sell you a truck. Easy to do if you are a "no trade in" buyer. Fly in drive home.

I'm in the Florida Keys. When I was shopping for my truck, I scoured the Florida dealers from Ft Meyers and Ft Lauderdale down. Some dealers here have dozens of CTDs in stock. Not many 4X4s down here, however. I ended up doing a special order.

the dodge website will only show about half of the actual dodge dealers because they only show "dodge" dealers. if a dealer is a ford/dodge, gm/dodge or is selling a competitors brand there inventory will not display on the dodge site. just a heads up.

best thing to do is go to dealer and sit down with a salesman and do a locate. the dealer has direct access all of dodges inventory, ford,gm or not.

for instance, dave smith motors doesnt show? supposed to be the biggest dodge dealer in the world, but sells ford and gm also.

Not true. The website only shows Five-Star dealers, regardless of what else they sell. Oasis Ford/Dodge here in NJ shows up in a search from dodge.com.

i guess im wrong . i've been looking for a new truck for two months and this is what i found to be true in "my" area.

theres four dealerships in my area that are supposed "five star"dealers , but dont show on dodges web site and they all sell other brands?

-Raises underhood temperatures considerably.

so, even though there's a 1000-lb engine in there cooking at 200 degrees, with an exhaust manifold and turbo boiling off even more heat, you still think a little tube and valve are going to make that much of a difference?

-Vastly increased complexity. Think about it... EGR cooled by engine coolant!

Um, quite frankly the complexity of the common-rail engine far outstrips that of the EGR system itself. "Vastly increasing complexity" is rather "chicken little".

-Greatly increased problems with coking your intake manifold.

possibly valid, but if it "greatly increased" this problem, I doubt it would see production. You forget this system has been under development for at least a couple of years. If it risked shortening the life expectancy of the engine, it wouldn't get done.

When I bought mine, I figured I'd have to order. I kind of wanted to order... figured I'd get a better deal  . I went to a local lot to see one they had in stock (according to dodge.com) Of course it was already sold. the guy I was working asked what I was looking for and asked if it would be okay if he did a search. He found the EXACT truck I was after at a big dealer about 300 miles away. We settled on a price the next day or so, and he drove up and brought it back free of charge. I had a good experience finding what I wanted. I would suggest finding a dealer you like and feel comfortable with and letting them find what you want.

Yes, I believe the EGR system will raise underhood temperatures notably.

As for coking the intake manifolds, VW is putting out EGR-equipped cars that coke their intake manifolds shut. Don't you think they did extensive testing before putting them on the road? It should be less of a problem in 2006 when we switch to low-sulphur diesel.

In my opinion, the additional servos, control programs, maps, and coolant plumbing are a "vast increase" in complexity. Common rail injection is not terribly complex (again, my opinion).

EGR Not a sure bet

Don't panic. . .

There have been several threads discussing the holdoff of orders for the "EPA" engine. There have been some threads also discussing what appears to be the "EPA" engine coming *without* EGR. Check around.

fly in drive home. i did, 1800 miles worth. mason is the gentleman that got credit for the deal and picked me up at the air port to boot. lagrange dodge in texas had the only truck in the entire country i wanted at the time. very good place by the way, no suprises and they they sure have alot of trucks for being a pretty small place.

regards,

It may not be egr that is put on the new 2004 compliant engines, it may have a catalyst like some have suggested.

Jzaremski - have you actually had a diesel with EGR? I have. The intake manifold clogged horribly and underhood temps were significantly reduced after I removed the egr. There is nothing good about EGR aside from reduced pollution, which is why most have made efforts to avoid it.

Rbatelle - you are correct sir. Once ULSD hits, the clogging will be non-existent. VW TDI's that are in california that run ARCO ULSD have zero intake clogging. I personally ran 100% biodiesel in my TDI with no intake clogging until I was able to completely remove my EGR and replace it with the DieselGeek race pipe. However, this is/was illegal, and luckily they dont do emissions testing here.
