OK, got the truck back with a new short block and the original injectors. I've put about 2200 miles on it now towing a ~3500# TT for almost all of that. I've been at altitude for all of the trip starting in Castle Rock, CO, going up to Sun Valley, ID then down to the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area then back to Castle Rock. Average MPG is about 12! I was thinking towing something that light (for our engines, anyway) that I should get about 15. Also, I couldn't climb hills of any significance at all without downshifting to 5th and slowing to as low as 50 on some of the steeper hills. It seems that the boost didn't come on 'till about 2200 RPMs and if they were down below 2000, accelerating up a hill was next to impossible. I'm going to check all the intercooler hoses in the AM - the only tools I had with me on our trip were 2 Leatherman tools and my bicycle tools. I was able to do some minor trailer repair with some of these, but nothing big.
Lots of "new" noises now, too. Of course, it's been 4 years since I've had a new diesel, so maybe they were all there the first time around, too and I just don't remember. The 3 biggest are sort of a medium frequency howling/whining (not the turbo whine, the pitch is lower) that comes on when under load, a sort of warbling whine with RPMs above 2200-2300 and finally, what to me sounds like a medium pitch drum beating a quick tempo when under load and with my foot deep into it trying to stay moving up the hills.
Any suggestions? Anyone notice any noises when the lift pump starts to go and the injection pump starts working harder?
Is that mileage OK for a break in period? Arrrgh! I think I'm paranoid now that I broke one engine!!
