New England fall trip

Hi Guys and Gals: MY WIfe and I are planning a trip to New England in the fall. Eventhough we will not be taking our fifth wheel and will be renting a car in Buffalo NY. I thought some of you in the east might be of some help to us. We will see our son in upstate NY and will obviosly see Niagara Falls but from there we will have about 10 days to see the fall colors. We would like to do the bed and breakfast thing but motels are ok. Thinking New Hampshire and Vermont. Thanks for your help. Brett

B&B's are very cost prohibited in upstate N. Y. But thats beside the point. If you go thru the Adirondack north country, and end up in Plattsburgh area you can take the ferry to Vermont and go across rt 15 to N. H. and on to mt Washington and then on to Maine. very pretty ride and lots of interesting town along the way.

Hi Ironbutt; Thanks for the info. Sounds like we won't be doing too many b and bs. I'll note your directions. I saw your description on your truck. Mine is an 01 shortbed with 182,000 miles and most towing our 5th wheel. And we are retired mostly. We've got 3:54 gear , Auto stage 5 ats transmission, guages, Edge EZ that I bought used at the last May Madness and installed. I'm not into building lots of power but must admit that the EZ made a big difference. Have you been to May Madness? It's fun and very informative. Thanks,Brett

Brett, if leaving from Buffalo area, why not stay along northern NY and go thru Lake Placid area, former site of the '80 Winter Olympics. Then go across Lake Champlain to the Burlington area, either by ferry or go north and come back down thru the Islands on US 2. Burlington is a nice college town with plenty of things to do. Shelburne Museum is a great place to visit just south of Burlington. Stowe, home of the Trapp Family Lodge, and Newport are nice places to visit or drive through. Any portion of VT rte 100 would be a good ride. Further south US 302 goes from Montpelier toward St Johnsbury area. Another good scenic route. Also, US 302 across NH would be a great trip. It goes near the Mt Washington Road to the Peak. Very interesting climb!!

If wanting to go further south, go to Port Henry, NY and take a free ferry ride across Lake Champlain to Chimney Point then over to Bridport, go south on VT 22A then follow US 4 across the state. This will go thru Rutland, Killington area and thru Woodstock. Again any portion of VT 100 would be great scenery.

There are so many scenic routes to follow here, I won't make this note any longer. Even the Interstates here are very scenic. But if you want any more info just let me know.

Hi Mrtrombley ,Thanks for the routes and info. I might ask you a few more questions later but for now the things we're wondering is if we can make it somewhat flexible and stay in motels without reservations or should we schedule that majority of the trip in advance. We would like to keep our schedule fairly flexible if possible. let me know and thanks for your help. In other words how busy is it during that time of year? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. Brett.

It is usually pretty busy in the fall leaf peeping season. I wouldn't want to tell you to go without reservations. I think it would be prudent to plan a trip with your stops and reservations ahead of time.

On the other hand, I am the type that might try it without reservations, but I would try to stop by 4 or so in the afternoon and start looking for a place to sleep.
