A KDP is a. k. a. "Killer Dowel Pin" - this issue affects all 12-valves and some of the really early 24-valves. It's a locating pin that helps keep the front timing gear housing where it needs to be. Cummins in their infinite wisdom made this housing so that the pin can come out and go through the gears... . ruining stuff.
Cummins hasn't admitted it's their fault... and that the occurrences of the KDP causing damage are allegedly low according to them.
We have jigs to drill the housing and prevent the KDP from coming out with a screw. Others take the cover off the housing and put a metal tab over it to keep it from coming out.
