New exhaust loud (drone?)

Installed a Jardine exhaust on my 02 2 weeks ago. Everything fit and the hangers slid right in. At first I bolted it together with the c clamps but it was loud in the cab when I climbed hills pulling my trailor. Next I bought ss band clamps but its still loud in the cab at 2500 rpm's. I have checked for clearance problems but all is fine. Is this the dreaded drone that all talk about with exhaust systems? I bought some exhaust sealant and will try that under the bands. Any other Jardine owners have this problem? DW

I've noticed that I can "tune" my exhaust drone by adding band clamps to the pipe. I have three extra clamps that are not on any connections and my drone has all but dissapeared.

Move your muffler.......

Too bad you used the crush clamps first. It will be hard to get apart. If yours is like my Jardine take the muffler and move it up one pipe length. Take that pipe length and put it where the muffler was. No more drone. Don't worry about no hanger in front of the muff, mines been that way for a year and a half with no sag. The 02 we did it that way right off and no problems or drone.

Resonator

Instead of moving the muffler, which seems like a good idea, but with the pipes clamped probably not possible, how about a small muffler bebind the transfer case in front of the muffler? It would have to be 18"s or less with a 4'' in and out pipe size. It woul be relatively easy to slide in there and match what I assume was the factories reason for the resonator. Next where do I find such a beast. DW

That was my original fix. It worked but I didn't like the sound too much. Especially after we put Rip's system on the 02. Love the sound of that Allied muffler.

From what I learned on the 01 we installed the muff forward on the 02 first off and used strap clamps if changes were necessary. No drone and it hasn't sagged yet.

I'll agree once the crush clamps did their work it's hard to get apart. When I had Rip send me the new muff I had him send me a section of pipe with a female end so I could just cut out the old stuff. Hardest was getting the piece off the pipe going over the axle.

Once again if your not worried about sound too much the resonator/second muffler will work fine, that and it can be cut in to make things easier.

Exhaust drone gone, sorta

Removed the exhaust bands then sealed them with exhaust pipe sealant. The pipes were somewhat disstorted where the c clamps hand gripped the pipes. Two days later it is quiet in the cab except in 3rd gear with the trailor on climbing a hill, but thats what it was like before the Jardine exhaust at 2500 rpm's. The exhaust is still a little loud for my taste so I orderd a resonator from Rip Rooks and will mount that up front. Will post results. By the way it was my first contact with Rip and what a great guy to deal with!

I did as DWest said, I installed a smaller muffler in front of the standard muffler.

You might want to call Jardine being your system is so new. They are usually very good about adding another muffler or resonator.

I had a Jardine with a 24" MagnaFlow, I was getting tired of my ears ringing after towing or a long drive, I called Rip and got a super deal on a 20" MagnaFlow. He even delivered it to the NWBombers Bombing party at Rob Hansons. In installed it in front of the 24" MagnaFlow as far forward as I could.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

I really like the new found quietness of my "White Obsession"!

If you don't get any help from Jardine, Call Rip! He can supply you with another smaller muffler or resonator to quiet your system down. At a great price!

If I did it again!

No matter who's system I bought I would specify band clamps only as they are forgiving of any mistakes you make in installation or choice of product. The Jardine system is of good quality and very easy to install as all the hangers are already welded to the pie and use the original locations on the frame. If I knew the sound level was gonna be this loud I would have ordered a resonator with it, but everyone's taste is a little differant. The drone was a result of the C-clamps distorting the pipe and not getting a good seal. As for Rip Rook's, I didn't buy his because his hangers are with the clamps and Jardine's would be welded on. If thats not an issue for someone else I would absolutly recomend Rip' products and most of all his service. He was more than happy to work with me in getting my project to where I would be happy. I can say that Rips system fit perfectly and went on without a hitch. And he was readily available to call for any help.

Jardine CA

JJ: Jardine of California. Just installed Dynomax from Rip Rooks in front of Jardine muffler last night and the sound is right where I want it. Probably to quiet for most but just right for me. No matter who's product you buy, put it together with band clamps instead of c-clamps. DW
