Just visited the car-truck website, and in the news section there is an article about a new fan drive. It uses a hydraulic motor powered by the PS pump, and uses much less power than the engine driven type. It's standard on the 2001 Grand Cherokee. Good reading.

Just look to our big brothers, the Class 8 trucks. They all have engine driven fans with names such as Horton controlling the clutch. I don't buy into any of the gas engine technology. The Jeep stationwagon needs something like that just to get more power out of that slug.

Volvo was using hydraulic fan motors on their larger front end loaders three years ago... why are they so far ahead of us Americans ????

The must be coming from Damlier (Damntheirhere). The Germans built a Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive a few years ago that was supposed to be superior to our Diesel Electrics. From what I remember it was pretty god if you got past the high maintenane downtime. Katdiesel you might want ot jump in here and set the record straight - what I'm giving is from memory and goes back a few years.
Happy Trails

Horton fan & NV4500 5 speed.

No, the device is an invention from Valeo, I think in France. IF you have the curiosity to find the facts on this item, I doubt you would call it names. One half the horsepower loss than an engine driven fan, absolute perfect duty cycle timing, improved A. C. cooling, engine cooling and less noise.
My wife's 4. 7L Grand Cherokee a "slug"? Don't know much about automobiles, do you?

I think Cadillac shutters like the road trucks have would be the cats meow! A capsule filled with beeswax in the radiator tank expands with heat and pushes the shutters open - infinite modulation according to water temp!
