Hello, I am new to the Dodge CTD ownership. I have a 2004. 5 3500 SRW wuth 48RE transmission. I am planning out my maintenance program and couple of questions have come up:

1. The manual states 75W-90 for the rear differntial. I was reading a Dodge bulletin on fill levels and they said 75W-140. Which is correct?

2. I am an old manual transmission guy but at my wife's request I got an automatic. Does the tranmission filter just pull out or how is it changed? What is involved in band adjustment?

Thank you,

Dave

Band adjustment is not very hard, and you just need a torque wrench. Front band gets torqued to 72 in-lb, rear band to 72 in-lb.

Front band uses a torx bolt with a locking nut on it. Procedure from the manual for the front:

-Loosen the adjusting screw locknut, then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to threads if necessary.

-Tighten band adjusting screw to 72 in-lb.

-Back off adjusting screw 1 3/4 turns.

-Hold adjustor screw in position and tighten locknut to 30 ft-lb.

For the rear, the pan must be removed (which you'll need to do to replace the filter anyway):

-Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.

-Tighten adjusting screw (which is a hex bolt) to 72 in-lb.

-Back off adjusting screw 3 turns.

-Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 25 ft-lb.

Should be very simple. If you get it too tight, you'll wear out the band prematurely. If you get it too loose, the transmission will slip when it's in gear. But I feel any person of reasonable mechanical experience could accomplish the task in under an hour without any trouble. Of course, I'm just guessing since I don't own a 48re and, hence, have not performed this service.

I haven't been into that trans yet but usally if you don't see a bolt going through the filter then pull it straight down look to see if the seal came with the filter if not then you have to pull the seal out of the hole that the filter came out of you should get a new seal with the new filter , in the future if you don't think you need to adjust the bands I think the best way is to flush at the cooling lines unless you have a TQ conv. with a drain plug, if you only drop the pan you only drain a small amount of fluid. If you don't have a flush machine remember that the machines are putting in as they take out .
