I have been reading all the posts I can to learn what and all I can. A few things have stumped me so far.....

Whats the significance of exhuast gas temps? Do they get too hot, or will the truck run better with cooler air??

Letting the Turbo/turbine cool? Does it get too hot, or only after freeway/towing ?

Last one for now #ad

Cat-less. . I am assuming that means the little gizmo (C. converter) Does it make the truck run a lot better? Engine cooler? Or did I miss the whole point!

I sure in the days to come, I'll give ya more of these questions. Ed

If EGT is too high your pistons melt! It takes a little while to do that, but that's what the concern is. EGT is an indication of combustion chamber temps.

Cooling down time is to get the EGT at or below 300. If EGT is too high at shut down your oil in the turbo crystalizes and that's tough on the turbo bearings.

Cats tend to plug up with soot.

The first instrument you want to invest in is an EGT gage.

Make sure you install turbo gauge sending unit BEFORE the turbo. My first one wasn't big difference.

Bug Out:

As far as the exhaust gas temperatures are
concerned I cannot add anything else to what
Joe G. has already advised you. If your EGT
probe is before the turbo (in exhaust manifold) keep the temperature below 1200-
1300 degrees. After the turbo below 1000
degrees.

As for your question on the catalytic
converter look in the archives for ALOT
of input on this subject. I recently
removed mine and can tell you my EGT's
are lower, the exhaust sound is a little
louder and low end response seems better.
My converter was completely plugged up
at 100,000 miles.

Hope this helps! Good luck.

EGT guage is a great tool. I have mine mounted post turbo, in the pre-cast boss on the turbo turn-down pipe. I would highly suggest getting one, along with a boost guage, which is very easy to install, using the factory plug in the intake manifold. I got mine from Banks. The "Cats" have been nothing but a headache on these trucks. Probably the main reason the newer ones don't use them!! Ditch that thing or 'gut' it!

Rule of thumb, is to let the engine idle about 5+ minutes after a tow, this should allow enought time for the oil in the turbo to cool down.

Plus it sounds cool, sitting there idleing when you pull into a campground and all the other campers think a firetruck or semi just pulled in #ad

Did they put a cat on any years for these trucks? I thought it was a "resonator" that looks like a cat and confuses everyone. just curious. The only thing my truck has in the exhaust is the exhaust brake. My truck likes it that way!

the 12-valve 2nd-genners came from the factory with "cats"--many have fallen off and run away.

Bugout,
I just gutted my cat last night and it was a big improvement. I couldn't believe what I saw when the comb came falling out. Secondly, I couldn't believe it came on my truck! The contents are no more than a thick baked ceramic-like screen that resembles a bee hive only alot smaller holes. I asked around and the best method to terminate the gunk in there was to crush the comb and let it fall out-so I did.

I removed the exaust and muffler (couple clamps and a few rubber hangers. Pre-lube with wd-40 and they come off with some grunt) I had to heat the clamped area red hot with a torch and beat the cat off with a 3lb mallet. It's heavy and once off, you can start the gutting. Put it verticle on a block of wood and take a long chisel or piece of 1" pipe and try to break up the interior comb. It takes some effort and this is where the 3lb mallet came in handy again. Once you get the junk out, blow or wash the cat out well. I just blew it out a small amount and when I heated the flange again to mount, the dust inside ignited and puffed a 1' flame out. Startled the hell out of me! #ad
Once on, reclamp and rehang the exaust. It was a good time to put the 4" exaust on from there and enjoy the sound and performance the Cummins is supposed to give. #ad
