New guy with 2003HO, and reverse tune diagnosis question

I have been a member for a few months. I owned a '95 12V in the past and ever since that pickup, I have wanted another Cummins.

About me - I'm pretty much a gearhead, but my main skill set lies in metal fab. I do a lot of off-roading in the desert, mostly in rails and on dirt bikes.

The truck - Last week I bought a 2003 C code quad cab 4x4. It has 74K on the clock and is super clean. Got it from a used dealer in Idaho, Carfax shows it was auctioned.

I live in CA and bought the truck out of state. This one runs really good and I suspected it may have been turned up a bit. Took it to the smog guy yesterday and he aborted the test for smoke during the test that calls for rapidly depressing the throttle several times. It just barely didn't meet the spec of dissipation in 10 seconds.

So now I need to try and figure out whats been done, and what to do about it.

What I know: Stock filter mounted lift pump. - I just replaced it, buying time to decide what delivery system to end up with

Cold air intake

3.5" exhaust.

I don't see a tuner, but I am not familiar with what to look for.

My question is are there common mild performance mods for the Gen 3 HO that I could easily identify? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to diesel performance, but good at diving in and figuring things out.

If it has a Smarty download there will be nothing to see - it's all programming.
With that amount of smoke there is definitely something wrong. These trucks pass the snap test by a mile if they are stock.

FWIW, I don't floor it during the snap test. Just push it down to about 3/4 throttle long enough to hit 2600~3000 RPM and let off.

If the truck has been driven for fuel mileage the exhaust will build up a lot of soot-normal.So the first time it is goosed for the snap idle it will be dirty.To test for this go out and do at least a half dozen hard accel runs.If it then is cleaner you have found your problem

Original owner could have put some larger injectors in there. If it had a Smarty tune the tuner the owner had is now worthless.......

It had a tuner (not a smarty, another brand). Flashed back to stock and all good.
