Hi guys,

First time to post-have really enjoyed reading all of the threads. I have found it to be the best source of info for us 1st gen. guys.

One question to start off with. I have searched and not found a post containing a breakdown of mods for our trucks--- such as STAGE 1 - STAGE 2 - STAGE 3 - starting with simple mods up to 2nd mortgage mods. Did find something like this on 2gen posts. Been reading long enough to kind of figure this out on my own-just wondered if it existed. Thanks for all the great info!

Welcome to the TDR, Banjo.........

STAGE 1- Pull out and sell 1st gen motor, Install 97-98 12v motor.

STAGE 2- go to second gen engine/drivetrain forum and start at Stage 1. :p

Just kidding. I'm sure one or two people here knows how to bomb a first gen. Enjoy the ride... ... ... ...

Ohhhh Hutch'... ... don't even say the 2nd gen word in here... shame on you..... this close || to a 5hp penalty for that one... . :D:D

Banjo... . WELCOME HOME

There isn't a formal Stage1, Stage2 kinda thing for our trucks.

They've been out a long time and were actually the forunner of diesel mods...

As a result, there are plenty of components that will do the job but no specific "packages" at this time...

Basically, your wallet is the governing factor here... as with most things, it depends what you want from the ole girl, and how much your willing to pay.

A fair bit of pump mods can be done for free, but you will need to make sure you deal with "air in/air out" issues.

Air filter/exhaust, turbo(s), and of course GAUGES!!!

They are absolutely necessary as far as I'm concerned.

With them, you can tell were you are now, and were you end up after a particular mod.

Pump work, including timing

Injectors

Turbo

Cam

Exhaust manifold

These are the main areas of improvement.

Ask away on anything specific and you'll get a good cross section of answers and results.

Welcome to the TDR

You haven't told us what you use the truck for! If you do not tow heavy loads. I think the first improvement is to drop those 4:00 gears.

Those gears would be good for a lot of heavy towing and for a drag strip coming off the line. But for overall performance a set of 3:54's would provide a better all around setup.

WHAT TO DO FIRST

HEY, welcome to the site, you will enjoy it here , i do much, the first thing i would tell you to do, is the cheep stuff, turn up your pump, change the timing, loose the muffler,so much for the cheep stuff, bhaf $42. turbo housing,$150. ,gauges $175. then the big guns, pod's $440. and so on,

;) ;) at this point you will be to hooked to stop , enjoy your toy,joe

Hey guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome! I didn't mean to confuse anybody with my STAGE nomenclature- I thought maybe someone had compiled all the different mods into a list from cheap to insane. I see guys ask how to gain horsepower and thought it doesnt make sense to tell them to do something wild if they haven't already done the basics. To answer Philips question- I use my truck to haul loads of logs with triaxle trailer and haul my dads backhoe around(he only has a chevy)- other than that I just make short runs. avg 21 mpg - truck is early non-intercooled.

Well you do need the 4:11's then.

If you look at the top of this page. you will see a button that is called user control panel. In this section you can setup a sig to tell use what your truck is. It will save you time and effort having to type in the info in a post.
