I just finished rebuilding a '99 24 valve motor and used the new head gasket that came with my rebuild kit, I put it in the truck and fired it up, sounded beautiful until I walked up to the front of the truck and it is shooting coolant out like a jet out between the head and the block just underneath the thermostat. So I removed the head thinking I did something wrong. Everything looked good with the head and the block I checked the flatness in that area of the block and it was within . 0004 across and the head was . 0008 across. So then I started looking at the gasket and where it seals the coolant port in that area it looked as if the port was missing the gasket are, so being the person that I am and I never throw anything away I went and got the old gasket and compared them. The new head gasket in that area was moved in a little more than a 1/4". So I put the gasket back on the block and it sits flush with the block, I removed the gasket and measured from the edge to the edge of the gasket material and got . 265". Then I measured from the front of the block to that coolant jacket it corresponds with and I got . 252", this leaving a . 013" gap between the gasket and the coolant jacket. So being sunday as it is I ran over to Freightliner and showed him the problem, We looked up the two different part numbers and he said the old gasket was updated to this new part number. He went back and grabbed another one and I still have the same problem. Tommarrow I am going over to cummins and I hope they will have a gasket that will go back to the old style.

My question is this, has anybody else had this problem.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks

what good is a headgasket that will cause the head to twist? Somebody needs to pull their head out of their @$$ and get some quality parts on the shelf. ! If you can't get decent parts from the dealer , where are we supposed to get them. The rickshaw people?

HELP - Radiator is full of oil ???

I ran into the same problem trying to get a headgasket for a Chrysler dealer.

If you have the original gasket, try to get the number off of it and call Cummins. If you can't get that number, have the engine serial number handy.

BTW - dseabaugh - all the parts I got from Chrysler were in original Cummins packaging - go figure... ... .
