OK, just because I wanted one, and the price from Piers looked good, compared to having the original machined and taking a chance getting a good job.

Question is, do I need to replace head bolts, and what is the proper torque sequence, without using the pounds plus angle method.

No big power here, just want to keep the 12 valver dependable for a long time.

Thanks, Smitty

Get new bolts, don't bother with old. For the price from Cummins it's a pretty easy decision (under $100).

I wish Piers deal on the head came along last year when I had mine done. Cost me within $100 of that getting it surfaced and valve job done, without replacing the valves or having guide work done (luckily they were still in great shape at 352,000 miles). The shop was backed up so I was without a truck for 4 weeks, would've done Piers head in a heartbeat.

If it were me and had just a few extra $$$$$ I would do the head studs instead of bolts. Do you need them... maybe not now but someday that power bug may bite. :-laf :-laf :-laf

I second that one :-laf :-laf

I have a dumb question---since I just replaced my head gasket and I know how crowded it is in the back. When you put in studs, how do you get the head over the top of them and then set the head down on the block? BTW this is the last sixer I will have unless there is a way in the cab to remove the doghouse!

dtygart,

You stud the block after you place the head. There are access holes in the cowl above the head that will allow you to install the studs and push rods. Easy as pie!

Thanks, Ronnie... that makes sense; I used the cowl holes when I had my head off. I just always saw studs put in first and tightened down, and then the part they were holding bolted on.

Are studs larger than head bolts? Why are they more desireable than bolts?

You can buy larger head studs if you have an extreme application, but they are not a direct replacement. The studs offer better strength thru less stretch at torque value. I lost a good head gasket because a head bolt stretched and blew out from under the head. Our trucks can use a 12 MM stud without any real changes. You can also purchase a 14 MM stud, but the head bolt holes must be reamed to clear the larger hardware.
