Being a full timer I see alot of differnet rv's every day. What I see most is Hitchhiker, Montana, Carriage, Excel and Mobile Suites. I have never seen a New Horizons fifth wheel. I have wondered why that is given the fact that they are supposed to be so well built. I have been looking for one so I can talk the owners. Has anyone seen one on the road or in a park?

Iv'e seen a few over the years. We went through the factory in Kansas. Darn nice unit. They only build like 90 a year. Where some of the other manufactures build 90 or more in a day.

I've heard they are very expensive. Their price probably limits the number you see. I believe all their units are custom built. You could visit and tour their factory if interested.

The weight of a New Horizons would probably require a MDT.

They are the only 5 star rated 5th wheel and HB is correct, they are spendy. The least expensive starts at $75K. I have seen a few. I was wheeling and dealing on a used one before I purchased my Arctic Fox, but the owner wouldn't give an inch.

You could probably hook up with Jack Mayer Jack and Danielle Mayer , he is a New Horizons ambassador. I know he has just made a deal to have a truck built by 2L Custom Trucks in Texas so maybe you could meet him when his truck is ready.

Jack and his wife went way beyond what I have in mind. It would be nice to talk to them though. Just considering all options out there as far as manufacturers.

Some friends of ours bought one in January. It is currently in Treetops rV Park in Arlington. Very nice unit. 42 feet long. Weighs in the neighborhood of 22,000 lbs. They have a Freightliner M2-112 with a 450 hp Mercedes diesel to pull it with. They paid in the $160,000 range for it. Retail was over $220,000. They are very satisfied with everything but the air conditioners. They just have not had a chance to make it back to the factory to have them changed out yet.

Rusty,

How is your Mobile Suite? Did you consider Select Suites? I think my choice is going to come down to Mobile Suites or Hitchhiker, I think New Horizons is beyond what I want to do. I like the Excels but, on the owners forums there seems to be alot of slide out floors rotting.

We've owned our Mobile Suites since August 2004. When we bought it, there were no Select Suites or Elite Suites - Mobile Suites was Doubletree RV's only product.

Excels, being wood frame RVs, are susceptable to rot, and they've had a lot of them with water leaks and rot problems discussed in the Excel owners' forum on iRV2. I have nothing against wood frames in general - I owned three wood-framed Jayco Designers - but they had better be watertight, and the Excels don't seem to be.

We've had excellent service from our MS, especially since we upgraded the wheels and tires to 17. 5" load range J Michelin XPS. That eliminated the Goodyear G614 RST tire problems. There aren't any on the market that I would be interested in moving to as ours still serves us just fine.

I think we have our retirement RV but if we would trade we considered a Torry Pine which I don't think they make anymore. It would be a Country Aire.
