I'm looking at upgrading my current stock injectors. Possibly the Mach 1. 6's. What I am wonder is will they work in the current stock configuration? I don't want to install a fueling box or have to tap the VP44. It is a daily driver that will see occasional towing duty, that being in the mountains mostly. I know there is a wealth of knowledge out there and look forward to hearing about it.

I feel that adding a box with those injectors is your best bet, a mild box will work very well, like an Edge EZ. I had a Van Aaken box in conjunction with a set of Don M 1. 5's, and a stock turbo, I loved it, the best towing set up hands down. I would have to work pretty hard to get the pyro near 1200*. You will also benefit from a box because it has a boost fooler built in.

Another route you could go is adding just the boost fooler and a boost elbow, to keep it cool. Boost foolers can be had for pretty cheap and will allow you to run higher boost pressures (which is going to happen with the injectors) to keep the pyro down, and also to keep from setting an overboost code.

I'd go with the edge comp just for the possibilty of going 5X5 if you just happen to need the extra power!! For now run it as an EZ (no pump wire) and when you do the intake, exhaust + turbo pierce the wire.

I have to recommend Marco's CaTCHER ECM here. Huge improvement over stock! :D I can't however compare it to fueling and/or timing boxes because I haven't driven with any of them. My Don M 1. 6's are on the way. I can't wait to put them in.

DjFire07 I will be very interested in seeing the results when you get your 1. 6's. Your setup is pretty much what I want to run. Does the CaTCHER ECM do the boost fooling? and what else does in do?

I've got mach 2's on the way and will be running the ez as a boost fooler for now, so I let you know how this setup runs when I get them. Is anybody else running these injectors?

I have the 1. 5's and an EZ and can easily hit 1200° towing my fiver on flat ground in OD. The only way I can keep the temps under control is to lock it out of OD and putt along at 50-55 MPH... Not exactly what I had in mind when I installed the injectors and changed out turbo's :(

A mild box or van aikens mods with the 1. 6 will work very well. You might want to consider a BHAF or a AFE filter system to help get the air in.

PMcBride, Since it is the actual ECM, it doesn't need to be "fooled". The boost limit has been raised. You still need to mechanically "adjust" the wastegate though (with an adjustable elbow, or turnbuckle, or j-hook). My truck is now much quicker off the line and passing. I can still easily drive it without smoke if I want to. But like I said, I can't compare it because it's all I've driven. I chose it after hours of reading the TDR threads. I may at some point get a fueling-only box in addition once my stock clutch gives up. My 1. 6's aren't in yet but there are several others who have been running similar setups who could tell you. I have a six speed, you have an auto, I have 3. 54's, you have 4. 10's, different strokes for different folks, I guess. I was stating the facts of what my truck did towing about 10,000lbs from Austin, TX to Redondo Beach, CA. Maybe the EZ runs hotter than the VA box??? I believe the EZ has more top end and the VA has more bottom end grunt. Like I said, just stating the facts. That setup is long gone for me now though. :-laf

I have the 1. 5s, 4" exhaust, BHAF, and a Comp box (Just tapped the wire last week). 6speed and 3. 55 gears.

With the comp in EZ mode, I could still get my EGTs up pretty fast. Even empty I could get to 1100° pretty easily, and always backed off before 1200°.

Pulled a trailer this weekend, with the box tapped, just around TX though, and I could get close to 1200° pretty easy. Never tried to see what it would max out at though. I was only towing around 4-5K.

I normally tow heavier, and in hills.

I will be towing out to Northern CA this weekend with about 8-9k, so I will see what my temps do.

I also have a turbo mounted exhaust brake though, so that will hurt my EGTs some.

I plan on getting a hybrid turbo (hopefully) within a month or so. This should be ideal for my setup.

I guess I would have to say an auto truck, '01-'02 equipped with the HY35 would get hot with this setup, towing heavy with your foot to the carpet. Maybe Froadin's truck gets hotter than mine did because it is an HO motor while mine is an SO. This setup is a killer towing setup, but you auto guys may want to look at a mild turbo upgrade to keep the egt's at bay.

No worries... I was simply doing the same thing you are, stating the facts. I will really see what it does this next month when I head for the Oregon Coast. Pulling my 12K fiver over the Siskyous and the passes around Grants Pass will tell me what I need to do, live with the high EGT's or dump everything but the EZ and go back to the way it was before.

I just downshift to get the rpm's up and take it easy. I would'nt take all your stuff off, I would do a mild turbo upgrade from what you have, like even an HTBG from HTTurbo.

Buff,

Yeah, those ones around Grants pass are pretty long grades. Have you considered making the changes to run an exhaust brake? It makes the Siskyous not bad at all. Of course I have the 6 speed, so the exhaust brake really makes those hills easy. I did the Siskyous last December with a 12K 5ver without any problems.

Tcolesanti,

Yeah, I have the HO motor and the exhaust brake, two things that make a decent difference between our setups.

I will need the hybrid setup to keep my EGTs in the 'no worry' zone. But I also want to be able to use more of the power that the Comp box allows for.

I like running enough injector to barely tow with, and then having the other 4 levels of the comp to play with. I can safely leave the comp on 3x5 and not have egt issues, empty of course, but then on kill, it gets pretty out of hand.
