Windshield wiper problems at freeway speeds?

I just bought a '90 D250 5spd. 56,000 org. miles from the org. owner. This truck is stock. It blows blue-white smoke on heavy accels when cold but seems to go away when warmed up. I checked the valve stem seals-ok and blowby out the road draft tube-none. It seems to have consumed about a quart of oil in the 700 miles I've driven it. Should I pull the pipe and look at the turbo? Trans question - It seems to growl when I'm cruising or just maintaining my speed. Right at the transition point between accell and deaccelleration. Is that normal? Thanks, I appreciate any imput.

Welcome to the TDR! You will like this place. I don't know about the smoke thing, but most of the 1st Generation owners I've talked to say that thiers growls too. Mine's got it pretty bad especially in 4th.

Welcome a board! As far as the growling goes I lived with that until I made the switch to the NV4500 - then what a difference. I can now hear the Cummins just hummin along - can't quite make out the tune though but it is sweet.

Welcome from another relatively new member. Lots of information here like..... your Getrag transmission is the growler. As with Bob, mine no longer growls 'cause its gone.

My 1992 blows the same blue/gray white smoke on the cold mornings and clears out as it warms up too. 4th gear getrag growls pretty good as you describe. 154K on the truck.

I've read and had similar problem. The solution here in TDR seemed to be that timing was a possible solution. I had my timing done and it seemed to clear up alot of that blueish/white haze for me.
Piers or Oldschool will be the best source for a more definitive answer.

Ok- I got the smoke too, only when it's real cold (Below 32°F)and I don't let the truck warm up good though. I parked at a coworkers house today and rode with him, when I came back and started going down his steep driveway I saw saw 2 streams of blue/white smoke trailing behind and filling his yard #ad

Another welcome to TDR.

The Getrag growl is "normal". In my truck fourth gear does make the most noise when heavily loaded at low rpm (20 psi @ 1500 rpm). In fourth NONE of the gears are loaded and the noise is from the gears rattling against each other due to the heavy vibration of the Cummins. The same is true under "float" (steady state cruise with no load on the trans).
