My lift pump has been acting erratic lately.
When you turn the key to "run" the lift pump only runs 1-2 seconds then stops.

I tried the "Key On, Bump starter" routing to simulate a prime of a new filter... . but the pump wouldn't run.

Truck starts fine and seems to run fine.

This afternoon the pump behaved normally.

So.....

Off to the local Cummins dealer.

I gave them my engine serial number and they gave me a new pump.

I noticed that the part number I recieved was differant than the one that others on this page have been given.

Per postings here on the TDR the part number for a 1998. 5 24V was : 3938367

I was told that the new part superceeds the old one and is now: 3938435

I wonder if the new part number means that the new unit is more reliable.
(i. e. re-designed)

I bought the pump and also bought the parts for a pressure gage.

Tonight I'm going to check the pressures before changing the pump.

If the pump keeps pressure. . and keeps working... I'll put the new one on this weekend.

I don't know HOW I'm going to get my hands in there to change the thing out!!!!

Not a job I want to start when I have to be off to work the next morning.

How many people here have changed the pump on their own ?

Any tips or tools needed to speed up the job?

About how long will it take to do the job ?

Thanks
Larry

larry , not sure on a 98 , but if you remove the fuel lines off your filter housing , disconnect the wiring and remove the 2 bolts holding it to the engine and pull out the filter there is more than enough room to do it from above , thats how the dealer techs do it . thats how i do it on my 2000 , will take you longer to prime the system afterwards than to do the swap . takes about an hour , the seal washer can be reused .

oh i forgot , 3 nuts hold it on , 13mm ... 1 10 mm holding on the input line , the bracket on the input line will swing up and out of the way once the bolt is off , hold the blue clips together and the fuel line just pulls right off , leave the banjo bolts loose till you get the pump back in place and you'll need to leave the one to filter loose till you get the filter in place to line the line up ... now would be a good tim to modify your banjo bolts or replace lines with parker lines and fittings .

WooHooo!!!!

Pump REPLACED in in less than 1/2 hour!!

My readings were as follows:
Old Pump (original 55000 miles)

Idle 8PSI
WOT 2 PSI and Dropping.

New Pump and New part Number

Idle 15 PSI
WOT 9-10 PSI

This job couldn't be easier!
