The new one is supposed to have an "internal bypass" to allow the vp to suck fuel thru it easier if (when) it fails.

After installing one of the new ones I suspect the bypass "effect" is accomplished by machining a little more space between the housing and vanes.

I used to have about 15-16 psi on good pump, this one sits at 12-13 idle and 10 cruising. I can pull it down to around 7-8 WOT. On the older pumps I couldn't pull them down below 13-14 WOT. All of these #'s are with the vulcan big-line kit and the LP as a pusher pump.

Well that would explain the fuel pressures I'm seeing from this pump. I recently replaced the VP and LP. I used one of those $70 campaign pumps, which must have the bypass ... 12-13 at idle, 11 at cruise. The one I replaced was getting better than that!

I agree this one reads about 3 pounds lower all around, using both installed elec guage and a mechanical. Too much trouble.

Guess what...think I have lift pump trouble

I know this will shock everyone, but I think I've got a failed lift pump, too. I was filling up with fuel tonight, and as I always do when fueling up, I open the water drain valve on the filter head and let any water that might be in there drain out. My usual routine is to open the valve, check the oil, then close the valve. For some reason this time a lot more fuel came out than usual, and made a nice little puddle under the truck. I must have taken longer to check the oil or something. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, until I started the truck after filling up, when it died after about 10 seconds or so. Knowing what happened, I key'ed off, then key'ed on, bumped the started, and then waited for the LP to kick in. To my dismay, there wasn't the usual whine of the LP. So, after another try and no luck, I proceded to start using the old crank for 30 seconds, wait for a few minutes, and try again. 5 or 6 minutes later it stumbled back to life. I'm pretty sure the pump is dead, but has anyone had a similar problem?

Thanks,

Justin
