50% loss of power suddenly.
Air and fuel filters and supplies OK. No smoke and runs smooth.

no smoke should be your first clue! if your truck still has the cat and muffler on it... do the Capt. Picard: Make it so! Also, start the truck, pop the hood and operate the throttle by hand... you may have a cable stretching problem.

When you checked the linkage did you check to see if the throttle lever on the pump touched the throttle stop at WOT? There are two screws that attach the linkage lever to the lever on the pump. They can get loose or fall out. If one of them fell out and the other is kind of tight you could get these symptoms. You need an 8mm wrench to tighten them. My '95 did that. A plugged cat should be a gradual loss of power.

HC,sounds like a fuel flow problem to me,cats don't usually clog up suddenly. It could be your return valve isn't keeping the pressure up or bad lift pump. Also just one tank of dirty fuel is all it takes to clog things up,remember there is a filter screen in the fuel heater and another in the fuel tank module. Easyest way to check all these things is to check your fuel pressure at the filter outlet bleed bolt,my '95s run at 20 psi all the time unless under heavy load. You will need an adaptor to go from the bolt thread to pipe thread in order to hook up a gauge,TST has these($25)they ship very fast.
Good luck

I don't think that cat is your problem, but:

They can plug suddenly. I had it happen once on a '95 Ford 460 box van with around 97,000 miles. It had slowly lost maybe 10-20% of it's power over about 4 months, then with in 1-2 miles went from cruising fine to a 20 mph top speed. This was a company work truck, and was driven quite hard. I limped it to the nearest hardware store, and bought a big hammer and chisel, then charged it to the company.

I was suspected that my Dodge's cat was plugged when I lost power. I drilled and tapped a couple 1/4-20 holes in the exhaust pipe before and after the cat, then checked the back pressure using a fuel pressure gauge (for a carburated gas motor). When done I plugged the holes with bolts. The problem turned out to be the overflow valve. I agree with Illflem (BTW, thanks for your help with mine, Bill), check your fuel pressure.

Thanks everybody,
I'm new to the internet,so thanks for your patience.
Found the problem today and it was the wastegate.
This site makes we want to get busy and hop up the old truck. Didn't know these were hotrods.
How do ya'll put the profile of your truck @ the bottom of the page?
Thanks again.

Go to the top of this page and click on "profile". Put your name and password in the spaces on the page that pops up. Click on "submit identification". The next page that pops up is where you fill in all the stuff. The block labeled "Signature" is where you enter the BS you want at the bottom of the page whenever you click on "Show Signature" on the bottom of the post page. Forum edicate is that you use you signature only once per thread. If you wanna get fancy with it get hold of Kat and he can help you go as crazy with it as you want.

H. C. ,
You might want to do a valve adjustment too, while your at it. It can be worth a little power and some extra mpg. It's always a good thing to check.
