Just joined up today.

Dont have a Dodge/Cummins yet. but I am looking for one.

REquirement -- NO computers.

What year did the computers start?

In my truck driving days(thankfully over) owned several 18's and the computer controlled ones sucked big time.

Left me walking more than once.

Never had that prob with the manual ones.

The sound a Cummins with twin 6 inch streights makes is sweet ! 'specially 79,990 lbs going uphill through the tunnels in West Va.

So am looking for a 1st gen 4x4, 5 speed, ex-cab in GA.

I have seen pics on the TDR site of 1st gen ex-cabs, are these from the factory? Never seen one on the street.

If I find a screaming deal on a 2WD, I might take it, and later convert to 4x4.

I found a one owner 92 reg cab 4x4 w 75K miles, but he wants $15K. and thats more than i have.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

Well howdy there new member. I just thought that I would jump in here and say hi to one new member from another new member.

I wish that I could say that I'm a retired truck driver, but I can't. Got another 12 years or so to go.

Your first generation 4WD extended cab is available. Just keep looking. You should be able to locate one for under $10,000. I've seen them here in Arizona for $8500-$9500. Most of them seem to have some mile on them, around 125-150,000, but with the little cummins that's no big deal. I'm running a 1990 one ton with 312,000 on it and it simply purrs like a rattlesnake, (oops, maybe a wron analogy).

Lot's of luck

Backroad

I want a dodge/Cummins, the wife insists on a ex cab.

I am finding lots of Ford ex cabs, and will get one if I cant find a Dodge in another 3 weeks or so. On the fords I think the best is the 93-94's but not sure.

I suppose that you could do something really silly, like go out and buy the Ford truck that you really like, then convert a Cummins Turbo Diesel to it. I really don't know why a person would care to abuse himself like this though.

Dennis.....

I am very much hoping we will nuke the entire middle east, and turn all the diaperheads into radioactive microdust.

If and when this happens gas will be about $15 a gal.

I want a non computer diesel before that happens.

Prefer a Cummins, but brand X will do if i cant find a Dodge.

If you are looking for a non-computer controlled truck then an 89- early 91 is what you want. Unfortunately they don't come with an extended cab. The 92-93 have some sort of 'brain' under the dash for charging and other systems but the fuel isn't controlled by that. If I were looking for a Ford, I would stay away from anything other than a PowerStroke as the IDI 7. 3 is very prone to cavitation without CONSTANT coolant maintenance. 1st year for the PowerStoke was in 94 (I owned one) with the manual transmission ONLY. Doesn't say PowerStoke (just says turbo diesel like the turboed IDI 7. 3 auto) but it is. Autos and the name badging came out in 95-97 (no PowerStrokes made in 98 model year) in the old body styles. You should be able to find a good Dodge for under $10k. Try online searching. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

What online searches would you recomend ?

I searched traderonline, but they dont have any 1st gen 4x4 5 speed dodges, and no keyword search, so I have to look at every ad to see whats there.

I found a sweet truck but the seller wants $14K

and edmunds says it worth between $7500=$9600.

If you want a good truck check out U. S. Treasury auctions. I purchased a 93 W-250 CTD xtra cab with 86K miles custom rims very clean for $ 9700. NO TAX. I sold it several weeks later for a tidy profit. It was an excellent fully loaded truck with no accidents and clean title. Look up U. S. Treasury auctions on the net for dates of sales and partial listings. They are in several locations throughout the U. S. Another place to look is local county auctions were I puchased an 89 ctd W-250 regular cab auto with exhaust brake for $ 3200. There was a extra cab W-350 which sold for $4500. Auto in white ( ex U. S. Forest Service) very clean w/ 170K miles. Great deals for a good runner. Be patient and you will come across a gem.

Ebay

When I was looking, I checked Ebay regularly. They had some come up for auction fairly often. I just checked and there were no club cabs except one wreck. Keep looking and be patient, they are out there. I was looking all over and ended up buying mine in my own little town. Surely you have already checked the classifieds on this site.

Hate to see someone have to resort to buying a Furd.

Good luck. These trucks are worth waiting for. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but fuel delivery didn't get computer control until the 24 valve in 98. 5 Other things have computer control like charging abs etc. The engine was the last holdout on going electronic.

Just make sure that you go out and drive a bunch of different years and body styles before you get out the green. If I had done that there is no way I would have ever bought a first gen dodge. I don't really like 'em (to put it VERY nicely), but since you are used to a rough and noisy ride you might be ok. I also drive trucks and know how they are. I ablolutely love my 98 12v, it has no computer and the truck rides perfect and is very quiet. To each his own though. Just don't get in a hurry and buy the first thing that you see (unless you think it is a smoken' deal). Good luck and enjoy your new truck when you get it!

CAnderson makes a good point. REAL trucks ride rough. Not like a Caddy. They shift when THEY want to etc. They don't have the creature comforts of the 2nd Gen trucks but that is just more stuff that will break. If you want a real all-gear transfer case and front axle with manual get-out-in the-mud-and-lock-your hubs, a 1st Gen is what you need. They other benefit is that you will never have kidney stone problems. The ride will beat them out of you! :D
