Have been reading the posts for two months and have learned alot. Have a case of filters from Geno's and need oil. Have anyone used conoco hydroclear power d 15 x 40. Had my truck since 10-3-00, have 2800 miles on it. Love the power. Thanks.

Stick with a good conventional oil for the break in (to approx. 15kmi). After that, stick with a good quality conventional or go with a synthetic. I personally swear by synthetics, but that's just me. Keep watching this thread, there are alot of people here who know more about oil than I do. Although, watchout for MGM. He has an opinion for everything. HA! #ad

Hutch, welcome to the group. I have used shell's Rotella T, for years and had real good luck. What ever you decide, just stick with it. I think the bigger harm is switching around. We are horse people also, and I am currently installing a fuel tank under a tool box. What brand name did you use? How do you like it? I almost didn't do it due to the high upfront cost. Plus I think it opens you up to having your fuel checked red ide.

Hutch:
I used premium blue from Cummins for 128,000 then put on an Amsoil dual bypass system an have not changed oil since. The only new oil I use is at filter change. The test keep comming back OK. Oh, I now have 184,000 on the truck with Amsoil 15-40. When I hit 200,000 I'll change oil no matter, just like my gear train.
Good luck

Has anyone here used Rotella SB? I saw it for the first time yesterday and wondered if it was as good as some of the other synthetics out there - or is it a semi-synthetic? Thanks for the input!

I didn't like the Shell Rotella T. I was noticably louder in colder temps than the Delvac 1300 I'm now using. This could be to the only -13 pour point of the Rotella T 15w40. Personally thinking about syn but have quite decided yet.

Never heard of the oil you are speaking of, but make sure to stick with a name brand oil in my opinion. Engine worth too much to not provide it good protection.

Hutch,
I've used PowerD since it came out. Never had troubles. I will let you know that I work for Conoco. However, I do my homework and would not put an inferior oil in my truck. Just to compare, I have specification sheets for both RotellaT and PowerD. There is a difference, especially the pour point. RotellaT has a pour point of -13º and PowerD has a pour point of -43º. Don't get me wrong, Rotella is a good oil and I used it prior to changing and never had a problem with it. I have noticed that my truck runs quieter in colder weather with the Hydorclear in it.
Whatever you decide, make sure you have it sampled when you change the oil. That can save you many headaches in the future.

Delo is a very good oil,I've been using it in my diesels for 25+ years no problems, but by no means it only one out there. There are many that meet the specs for Cummins engines just pick one that easily available for you and stick with it. One thing that's always bugged me about the syn oils is if you are traveling in the boonies or Mexico and need to add a quart of oil good luck unless you brought it with you. Delo is available almost anywhere.

I have been happy with Rotella. I've used it since new, 34k and so far so good. I went coast to coast when I first bought it, I had to get a few changes on the road, I pulled in to a Jiffy Lube in Cheyanne WY, and their house diesel oil was Rotella, I was surprised, I expected it to be a Penzoil product. I can get a good price on it by the case at Wally World, where you can also get Delo or Delvac, Their all good products. Consistency means a lot.

Right now i'm using Rotella T w/fleetguard . Just picked up a case of Preium Blue 2000,i'll be changing over when i use up the last of my Rotella .
