Hello everyone, i am a new member but have been following sight for several years. thanks for all of the great knowlege shared.

I have a question.

Can a smartbox for 2001 engine be used on a 1999 engine?

Assuming i have accurately identified the MAP connection on the engine.

There is a difference between the 2001 MAP plug and the 1999 MAP

plug.

Are there adapters available for the 2001/1999 application?

The injector pump plug appears to be identical.

I believe the smartbox is a V5 model.

thanks

The '01 and '99 use not only different shape plugs, but also have differing base voltage settings for the Map sensor. I do not have a V5 installation manual any longer, so I an not sure if they will interchange like a TST will or not.

Thanks for the replies, by the way,

on the back of the smartbox the spec tag says:

Can-Bus Pump Controller

Application: Dodge Ram, 24v Cummins, 215+235hp, 1998. 5 on

The fact that the spec tag on back of spec box specifies that the box is for 1998. 5 on. may imply that the model for different year engines had engine specific wiring harnesses.

any more input would be appreciated?

thanks, hd

the serial # 17548

i don't see a model #

sorry i don't have more info, i purchased smartbox used, supposed to be a V5, it was being used in a 2001 and after reading the specs for VA smartbox V5 1998. 5-2002 I assumed the box and wiring harness should be common to those years.

should have done more research.

You should still be able to hook up to the vp44 and run it without the boost fooler(map sensor). If that get to be a hassle just get a boost fooler for your 01.

my truck i a 1999, that sounds interesting, please forgive my ignorance but what exactly is a boost fooler, and where would it be installed?

It's a device that connects to the map sensor so the ecm doesn't see more than 20 psi of turbo boost. If the ecm sees more than that it will defuel the engine. You unplug the factory wiring from the map sensor and plug one end of the boost fooler in it's place and the other into the factory wiring . The turbo will also limit pressure by means of a wastegate so that will have to be modified to go beyond 20psi.

I am not sure ( others will know) how much turbo boost can be achieved with stock injectors and an van aaken smartbox but ,

If you are thinking of increasing the output of the engine I would recommend a boost gauge an exhaust gas temperature gauge and a fuel pressure gauge. I would also recommend replacing the stock lift pump with a fass or similar fuel pump.

georgej, Thank you for the info, i now have a much better understanding of a boost fooler and its purpose. Guages will be added for sure. I am interested in bumping the engine performance up as mildly as possible just to make the truck more enjoyable to scoot around in. In the past i've had a "94" 12 valve in which i installed a tst plate as well as an "04" DRW that i ran with a mild VA box, i've always been content with the slight bump up in performance and the boost fooling technique, although i had heard about it, had never researched the purpose.

i was hoping to find out that it would just be a matter of changing out the wiring harnesses on this VA Smartbox V5 to convert it from operating on a 2001 to my 1999 engine. if it can be done i will probably have a heck of a time finding the correct wiring harness since VA is OOB.

i must apologize for the error but the box in question is not a Smartbox V5,

it is a:

Van Aaken Smartbox R

spec tag:

Can-bus Pump Controller

Application

Dodge Ram

24V Cummins

215=235hp

1998. 5 on

It was on a 2001 and i want to run it on my 1999. Map sensor plugs are different.
