This place is great!!!!! I have a 1996 2500 4 x 4 std cab long bed. The truck is all stock. I know I can hear all of you laughing. I am planning some major modifications in the near future. I don't want to hurt my mileage. Oh yea it's an automatic with 3. 50 gears. Should I change the turbo or housing or both? I would like to get this straightened out so I could get a new exhaust system. Also, Jet Hot is close to me, so should I pull the exhaust manifold off and get it coated? After I get this straightened out I will address the fuel pump and injectors. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you have the bucks to do most all your bombing at once I highly recommend a Banks Stinger kit. You can get the same bang for the buck elsewhere, but the Banks is an engineered as one unit bombing that won't blow out your transmission. You will for sure see a big difference. I've bought two and they would be my first choice for another when the time comes around. Add injectors later if you feel you need more power.

Thanks for the reply illflem. I don't really care about blowing out the trans as long as it can be rebuilt to handle the additional power. My two concerns are maximum highway mpg coupled with the most power. Does Banks have different type kits? With different size turbos?

You may want to email Joe Donnelly at donnellyj@msn.com tell him what you plan to do. He can steer you in the right direction. I know that I wish that I had consulted with him before I placed my first order!

Good luck,
Robert

They do have different kits, their top of the line with the Twin manifold is a waste of money. IMO the Stinger is the best for the 12 valve,it includes EGT& boost gauges, larger turbo housing, fuel cam plate, larger exaust system(lose cat on your own)and very good instuctions. Just click on one of their banner ads on the top of the TDR pages, they will supply lots of info or you can call and discuss your needs with a rep. More power= better mpg.

The Banks Stinger-Plus comes with the 14cm² turbo housing.

Bertyz;

Stock is many members of this site including me (for now). Take your time and do some research before you start pouring money into products that you may later regret. I'm trying to learn from other TDR members and slowly making my list based on their advice.

I forgot to add that if you can find a local chapter, most of these guys have been around the block, up the mountain pass, down the freeway, ... ( you get the point) when it comes to enhancing these trucks & engines. They are the ones to teach you the basic maintenance & the fire breathing BOMBING. I got lucky and started out by hitting Dyno Days at BD Power Products. What a rush of adrenaline, diesel smoke, & testosterone. Lots of tips & tricks from the other dieselers at that fest.

My 2 cents

I agree with JOHNE. You can learn ALOT from this site by reading all the posts and replys. The first and probably most important things is GAUGES. Get all three and install them while still stock so you can get some baseline numbers, like what are your egt's and max boost right now,so you can tell if your B>O>M>B>ing is helping or hurting. Good luck and nice to have you in the "stock for now"club.

I'm a new member too. I've been reading this forum and changing parts for about a year. Joe D. has been great. I just got my 370's and will put them in this week. I put my Cummins in my Chevy dually so maybe I'm only a partial member.

OK, Newby's... . dont go with Banks!!! Waaaaay too much $$$ for very few gains, comparitively. I agree with the guys about consulting Joe D. as he's THE guru here! If I could steer you in a direction, (depending on what you want to pull) there are a few different recipe's for different budgets. For a cheap-buck-bang, go with a TST plate for $200 in the group purchase, an aircleaner, and some exhaust work to let it breathe. You'd be all done for around $500, and the truck will fly!. . dont forget, your mileage will go up! If you want/need more, do a more aggressive plate, injectors and a turbo housing along with the air cleaner and 4 inch exhaust... this should be in the 400+hp range, around $1000 spent, and your automatic wont last 200miles!!! LOL Domino's, my friend... cause and effect... have fun!

BCFAST,the mods you just suggested cost $5 more than Banks Stinger Plus for basicly the samething except the Banks includes gauges.

The only thing I can be sure to let you know is to do a whole lot of research on what you're getting for what you're spending. There are a whole lot of illusionists who will use smoke and mirrors to try to sell you something you either don't need or will embellish a bit on what something will do for you. Think realistically, if you're spending X amount of dollars and expect to get Y results, be suspicious of someone pitching Y + 100 results to you. Everyone posted very well supported ideas in the previous postings. They are all well educated members and all our experiences will also help you figure out which direction you'll want to go in so that you won't make a mistake that one of us did. Power wise, shoot for the stars, it's all within your reach.

Bertyz,

You're in a good spot. On one hand, this site offers you all of the information you need to make an informed decision on your future upgrades. You can search for the answers and make your decision based on your own research... Or on the other hand, you can mearly call the 'guru' diesel gods and get the sum of your power quest equations in a few minutes. It has been my observation that those who want the answers without doing thier own research initially, wind up doing it in the end. I was in your position not too long ago and man, I wanted more power NOW! After searching the archives on injectors, cam plates, exaust and turbos, I learned enough to start leaning in a particular direction of build-up that best suited my needs. I then backed it up by e-mails to the 'gurus' who have done the research. By the way, some of THEM even disagree on build-up methodology. Just remember... Air + Fuel = Power.

Get your guages first though. The rest is really up to you in the end.

Good luck. #ad
