Thanks, TDR Staff

Newbie from Reno, Nevada

Newbie,2006 Megacab

First of all I want to say I am impressed with the ease of the registration process and all those involved made it a breeze.

I live in Arlington, Va and have a 2002 2500 ram 4x4 with a 6 spd. It has been a great truck up until the last few months. Intermitently at first and now frequently it loses power and throttle input is seemingly useless. It will maintain speed but wont accelerate if empty ( no load ). after anything from 5-60 seconds it will come back to normal. If the truck is loaded or towing it slowly loses speed until power comes back.

I have pulled codes and identified pump failure faults. I replaced the lift pump with an aftermarket unit leaving the old assmebly inplace but disconnected.

I still have power loss.

From what I have read I will need to replace the VP44. I have found BD diesel offers a rebuilt unit and today just discovered Industrial injection offers the HRvp44. I dont know which is better. I also am not sure if I should tackle the replacement myself.

Thanks in advance for any info or help. I wasnt sure where to make my first post so I made it here.

Welcome to the TDR. Sounds like your VP44 is going bad. If you are under 100K miles the dealer will replace it for free. However you claim the LP was replaced but the old unit is in place? Are you pumping fuel through the dead pump? Do you have a FP gauge and is your FP good?

You also claim to have a 6 speed. Do you have the High Output engine? Look at the data plate. If it says 245HP (versus the SO 235) then you can't run the hotrod VP44 - the HO ECM only talks to the HO VP44.

I quoted you here not sure what you mean did you leave the old lift pump in place using a pusher pump to push fuel thru the old lift pump also tell us what mods u have and how many miles on the truck. we need more info

Try re-programming the APPS first, doesn't cost anything and could be the problem. bg

Sorry for the confusion.

Service history shows warranty replacement of vp44 at 95K miles.

I am now at approx 160K.

I have installed a Bully Dog fuel pump kit Bypassing the stock LP.

The stock LP and its lines are still in physically inplace but are no longer carrying fuel.

No fuel is passing through the stock LP.

I have just hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and have to plumb in the manifold for the gauge sender. No pressure readings available just yet.

What is the APPS? And how do I reprogram it?

Thanks for all the info !

Yep - you have a HO engine - order code ETH.

Reset the APPS with the following procedures.

RESETTING THE APPS SENSOR.

(ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR)

2ND GENERATION 24 VALVE TRUCKS ONLY.

LIST OF TOOLS NEEDED

DIGITAL VOLT METER

# 20 TORQUE BIT SOCKET

# 1 PHILLIPS

# 10 MM SOCKET

Proper service and repair procedures are vital to ensure personal safety of those performing the repairs. Standard safety procedures and precautions should be followed at all times to eliminate the personal injury or improper service, which could damage the vehicle or compromise its safety.

Although this material has been prepared with the intent to provide reliable information, no liability is assumed in reliance of this material.

It has come to my attention that a lot of people think by disconnecting & re-connecting the batteries and stepping on the throttle it is going to reset the apps, no, that is not correct. It is impossible to adjust your apps if you do not know where it is supposed to be set at. That is why you need the voltmeter.

This is the procedure I use to re-set the apps.

With the key on, engine off you need to probe the apps wire to see where your voltage is currently set at.

The best location to probe the wire is on the PCM (power control module) which is located off the passenger side of the firewall.

· You want the C1 connector, this is the connector closest to the engine,

· You want the orange wire with the dark blue tracer which is pin # 23

· Voltage should read somewhere around 0. 5 volts,

· At this point the voltage reading does not matter, it just has to be accurately written down for later reference.

*** TURN THE IGNITION OFF ON THE TRUCK ***

· The apps sensor is located slightly above and a little to the left of the injection pump.

· Remove the black plastic cover that is located by your injection pump.

The two screws that are holding it are plastic, do not put any downward pressure on them or you will never get them off.

· Un do the 6 - 10 mm headed bolts that hold the bracketry in place.

(DO NOT REMOVE THE CABLES)

You will notice the apps is on the back of the bracketry that you just removed, it is held in place by 2 - 20 bit screws. These screws have a little bit of locktite on them so make sure you have a good socket and gently give a little tap with a hammer before attempting to loosen. Be very careful these screws strip very easily and you only get one shot at them.

· On the apps you will find a white tag that gives you the information on what the apps adjustment should be.

· After loosening the screws you can rotate the apps both clockwise and counter clockwise to get the adjustment you need.

· The reading you took at the beginning of the process on pin # 23 should match the white tag on your apps, if not adjust accordingly.

I don't believe that's a limitation. There's a handfull of H. O. owners on here that are running the hotrod VP44.

First thing I would do is cycle the key and get all the codes again. Post those please.

If you have a P0216 code, the pusher pump is doing nothing or more likely, you need a VP44.

Opinions vary on where to buy them, but make sure you get it from a company that offers a warranty.

The dead pedal and power coming and going are very indicitive of the VP going south. Get those codes!!

Dave

Thanks guys... . I have pulled codes before... . I forget how to do it.

If memory serves... cycle the key three times quickly and watch the odometer ?

I will go out and check right now.

Thanks again for all the comments. I am very interested in trying the HRvp44 if there are enough owners here that have had success with one. industrial shows 1000$ which is the best price I have seen. For a replacement VP44: The dealers want 1800-2000$ and BD diesel asks 1400$

I want to get more power out of my truck once I have this issue resolved. If anyone with the same model as me that has also made digital upgrades and replaced the VP44, please share your experience.

just pulled codes:

1693

0230

0216

A few months ago I was given a link to a site that had all of these codes defined.

One computer failure later and I no longer have that link.

It's your pump, those are the codes my dad's 01. 5' had when his went out at 80k. Give Bob Wagner a call at 1-888-225-7637 www.wagnerandassociates.biz/ . My buddy just replaced the one on my son's 01' this past weekend, it had 167750 miles on the original pump. If you have the time, right tools, shop manual, and preferably an indoor shop then give it a shot. If not then find you a good diesel mechanic.

thanks for the info. I have also just spoken to Tom Straum a member here in my neck of the world. He is giving me info with regards to a local Dodge dealer who could do the install. I would like to do it myself, but I am also building a race car and have 7 weeks before my first race. Tons of work to do.

If it can be done in a reasonable amount of time, I still may consider doing it myself. I just want to get more info from the members here before I make my decision.

I will give Bob Wagner a call and see what insight he has as well.

Thanks everybody.

Now this is why I joined TDR This kind of help and and concern for someone who needs help with their truck, and although it is not my truck, thanks to all those who have helped Renntag.

Thanks for the additional info. I will give them a try.

I am really leaning toward the HRvp44. It sounds like a good performance upgrade as well.

I am also considering replacing the pump myself. At this point it just seems like a time issue.
