hello everyone. thanks for reading.

i am a new member from SC.

i was pointed this way by Wayne from Aiken.

i have a 2001. 5 4x4 auto quad cab shortbed.

so far i have added a 4in turbo back exhaust and an afe stage 1 filter set up.

i am want to add an edge ez or similar product. someone told me about motorvator (sp) boxes and recommended them over the edge. i was also told i would not need to add an egt gauge or any others.

please give me some advice concerning an add on module. has anyone heard of or used the motorvator? pros/cons? the ez? pros/cons? i would love to hear about other similar products that have worked or not worked for you.

i have heard conflicting info concerning gauge addition with those mods. i have no current plans to do any mods past the box. would egt, fuel pressure and boost be the three to get?

does a box such as the ez leave any trace in the computer the dealer can pick up (if the box was removed and the truck in for service)? my truck is still under warranty.

i tow 2000-3000lbs often and about 8000lbs very seldom.

thanks in advance.

Gauges should be you FIRST bomb. Put them in, get a feel for how the truck runs (temps, boost #'s etc) then add the box. It is possible to add enough fuel with a box to melt a piston but how do you know without gauges? Pyro is first choice and wiht teh lift pump problems of your trucks era fuel pressure second. Boost is a close third, I'd add them all.

I'm not familiar with "motovator" boxes. Edge is a big name with a couple products for your truck (EZ, comp, drag) depends how much fuel you want.

Welcome to the site, you've come to the right place. Go into the user control panel (it's in the discussion forums pull down menu) and put the basic details of your truck in your signature. Then when you post we all know what we're dealing with.

Anyone who tells you that you DO NOT have to put gauges on is right, you do not have to. There is no law or rule, but there shoud be. But you should, you really really should get the gauges first.

I would consider anyone who does not advocate installing gauges an unreliable source of advice and take anything they say with a grain of salt.

Fuel pressure gauge #1 important, EGT, and transmission temp next, boost would be optional but handy for seing how the performance is doing, and for trouble shooting.

I have not heard of the "other " box either. The Edge is really aggressive with the timing, but on the ETC engine (found in auto equiped trucks and pre 2000) does not mind, and makes a huge difference. That will also be about as far as you can go with performace mods until you address the transmission. It will start to slip with too much more. You might get away with throwing in some 275 injectors with the Edge, but no more.

There are a variety of other boxes out there, and some of them are just re-packaged Edge EZ's. Take a look in the links section for a list of reputable shops that sell performace products for our trucks, then do your shopping around.

I would stay away from anything that connects directly to the VP44 injection pump via pump wire or harness, unless you have LOTS of money laying around. $1400 for a new injection pump (you have a year where the VP44 dies really quick if it decides that it does not like the high HP (80 - 140 hp) fueling box... 50/50 chance of survival), and $1500 - $5000 for a transmission upgrade.
