Preventative Maintenance Videos

New Cummins owner

Hoody to one and all,

This is the first time I've owned a diesel rig.

This is a great site. I plans on doing all the search I can, but maybe someone could answer some questions for me. . Just bought a 1992 1 ton with the turbo engine. .

1st question How do I wipe this grin off my face :D

2nd question How much smoke if any would be normal out of the exhaust pipe while driving?

Question 3 What color smoke should it be?

I forgot to mention the truck has 110,000 miles on engine and is a auto trans I am the 3 owner, Fist owner put on 75K miles second owner put on 35k miles in the last ten years.

I am sure I'l lhave more questions latter on.

Thanks in advance

Welcome, I'm a relative newbie to diesel ownership myself. As to the smoke question, "normal" smoke for a diesel is black. How much will depend on what sort of modifications the previous owners may have happened to do to the engine to increase power.

The others are correct about the grin, just don't fight it, I know mine isn't going away...

One unasked for suggestion if you've not already done so, consider changing all the fluids, since as a new owner, you probably don't know how much if any of the preventive maintenance was done to it up to this point. On anything I aquire that's been previously owned I like to make it a point to change all the fluids, differentials, the various fluids in the engine, the transmission, and all that fun stuff, just to get a baseline of what's been done and when that you know of for a fact... Just my $0. 02 though...

Welcome RS,

My first diesel too. Just got it in August. Couldn't be happier (unless someone showed up on my doorstep w/ a DTT transmission). Always been a diesel fan and finally got one.

Good luck on getting rid of the grin. I haven't. ;)

Smoke:

Should see some white smoke when it's cold. Might see some blue/black haze when you put yer foot in it, before she spools up. I just bumped my timing upto ~17. She blows pretty good blue/black haze before she's fully warm. Once warm, I don't see any smoke unless I get into it. I'm not too familiar w/ the VE pump vs. P7100, so I'm not sure what's involved to help the fueling curve. Guys in the 1st gen forum will give you more than enough info and advise.

Sounds like you got a good rig. Once again, welcome! You are in good company. This is the best forum imaginable, IMO. Most of the guys on here would give you the shirts off their back. Hope it inspires the rest to get there too.

Agree w/ TSpecht: you really want to go over the whole rig and make sure you don't have any weak links. I've done alot since I got mine.

Important issues:

KDP

Brakes

Shocks (mine were shot)

Timing (rattles more @ 17, but more effecient)

Fluids

Steering & front suspension

Take care,

Hvy
