I'm a new 2500 4X4 Auto Cummins owner (3 weeks) and have a question about a strange noise the truck makes between 1600-1900 rpms: Around this rpm range, the truck exhibits a moaning or whistle/ringing noise from beneith the passenger area. I can't tell if it's exhaust or transmission. It sounds like someone blowing across the top of a beer bottle, but higher pitch. Or, the sound made when someone runs a wet finger around the top of a wine glass. It sounds like some type of harmonic, but it only occurrs in that rpm range. Inside the cab with the windows closed, I first thought it was a faint siren. With the windows open, it's very clear. I guess I would like to know if this is normal and just a characteristic or if this is a known issue, perhaps with a remedy. Other than that, I love the truck!!!

What year is the truck? For models 98-99 ESN 56587424 and before, TSB 09-04-99. This TSB describes what you have, replace the heater hose connector. If under warranty, dealer should do it.

Can't access Fritz's web site (dodgeram.org) where I originally got the info. I have a hard copy of it from last year... "sound of the noise may be described as a whistle, a squeal, a howl, a moan, or gurgle. Noise will most often occur when the warm engine is operated between 1500 and 2200 rpm's. The noise is usually heard in the cab, louder on the passenger side or seems to come from the dash vents. "

The noise may be caused by the cooant supply hose connector located on the cylinder head next to the turbocharger.

Hope this helps.

I have heard that sound complaint from other owners, and it turned out to be nothing more than the turbocharger at a specific range. My '96 makes that sound at about the same RPM, but only since I installed an aftermarket air filter to increase flow. I get the sound at around 3 psig of boost only.

Mine has made that noise since new and noticed it specially when towing.

I haven't really noticed it lately but I've change the exhaust to 4" since then... ... ... ..... Now that's what I call enjoyable music:D

mfusco, don't worry, be happy and enjoy the Cummins.

My truck also had the same thing especially when it was cold but it seems to have gone away. I figured it was a exhaust drone or slight vibration somewhere. I wouldn't worry about it I did and it turned out to be nothing, I have 80k on the truck.

Noise? What noise?

My '01 made the same noise for the first 1500 miles and then went away.

Hope yours does too!

Mine did the same thing. Not always but at about 2/3 throttle on a slight grade. Dealer is in the valley so I could never reproduce it for them. It did go away when the injectors were installed and has never come back.

Just bomb the hell out of it, then you won't have it.
