Hey guys, abs and brake lights have been on for years now and I'm ready to replace the ps pump and hydroboost. Any recommendations on where to get these parts and tips on installs? I plow snow and it sucks not being able to turn the wheel unless I'm moving. Thanks in advance:)

I just replaced my power steering pump which I picked up from O'Reillys. I have had good luck with O'Reillys so far, another place for parts is RockAuto. Do yourself a favor and get the Gould vacuum pump reseal kit from Genos. That seal kit was the best $59 bucks I spent on the project. They send you everything you need to put the two pumps back together plus a dvd incase you need a visual reference. The factory service manual helps as well if you have one. It is easier to remove the vacuum and power steering pump as one piece, then seperate them when you have them out of the truck. I took my time and spent about 4 hours total with the remove and replace. Once done all I did was top off the pump and with the wheels off the ground with the engine running I turned the wheels about two turns each way about twenty times. After that I put the truck on the ground checked the fluid and drove it, so far everything is working fine.

Being that these trucks use fluid pressure from the ps pump for the brakes by simply replacing your pump it may correct the brake problems you are having. I would also suggest bleeding the brakes too and see if that helps as well. One other thing, check all your vacuum lines. There is a line that comes off the vacuum pump and goes to the firewall, all my lines at the firewall were rotted and needed replaced.

Thanks! I'll get to ordering :) Seems like I got a bunch to do. I thought I read somewhere that the hydrogen canister can empty causing no brakes when the motor isn't running?? I need to fix that too, but am lost as to how

If I read the service manual right the hydrogen canister I think they call it an accumulator should be part of the power brake booster when you purchase a new one.

The reason I say this is the service manual talks about testing it and if it fails the test it says you need to replace the power brake booster.

I am sure if I am wrong there will be plenty who have done this that can correct me.

You might want to splice a cooler into the return line. I have an extruded aluminum cooler mounted up behind the front cross member.

The $59 vac pump kit can be had from a Cummins distributer for $11! The stealership wanted $113.

But they are not the same. The seals in the Gould kit are better and the shaft seal is a double lip seal so that it runs on virgin steel instead of the groove from the previous seal. The gasket to the timing housing is much superior to that wimpy OEM so called gasket.

And the $59 includes the DVD. The kit can be purchased without the DVD. (I think the price is $39) The DVD is worth the money if you have never done it before.

The one I just put in last Sept from the local cummins svc ctr had a dbl lip seal. I don't know if it's something they changed recently or if I got lucky, but I'll take it! Otherwise, I've never had problems with them. This one went bad because the ps pump shaft split and chewed everything up. The pump was from O'reillys. It was an A1 Cardone as 95% or remans are.

Geno's sells the Gould kit less the DVD and install tools for $29.
