Have you ever experienced the trick of holding a person seated in a chair by placing a finger against his or her forehead? For some reason, the center of gravity is unable to set itself into motion to get up, thereby rendering the seated person held in place.

My question: why don't car manufacturers do away with seat belts, harnesses, air bags, etc. , and just build an artificial finger that swings out like the sun visors and rests against your forehead while driving?

If this is already in the works, please disregard the idea.

Although most of the stuff I post comes from the depth of my Homer Simpson sized brain, this one didn't. This subject is a figment of my web browsing, but I could have thought of it myself someday :)

The reason the finger trick works is because the person is getting out of the chair on his own power. In a collision the person is getting out of his chair by the force of inertia. A finger sticking out of the visor might keep the person from being thrown from the vehicle though. Sort of like a meat hook though the forehead, not a pretty picture. Do you remember the time Homer tried to jump Springfield Gorge on a skateboard?

ifflem is in the ball park. . it also has todo with the inner ear and sensing balance and leverage (length from the lower back-stomach to the forehead)... you need to overcome your own sense of balance to overcome the finger trick. . doable for those practiced in certain physical activities.

The force of momentum during an accident far exceeds the power at work with the forehead trick... The major mass needs to be restrained. Hence the seat belts , as minimal as they are.

Like Ifflem said... Hew that would be one nasty headache at best. at worse. . no headache problems anymore.

Frankly even the seat belts today aren't sufficient. I've got permanent damage in my shoulder from the shoulder belt from and accident. Too much pressure can be put into on point of the current safety belt systems. I was just getting the point of putting in a 5 point harness into my last 'yota when the accident happened , truck loaded up with stockade fences ran a red light and ripped the cab off the frame, knocked me out. Of course if I was 100 lbs instead of 250 at the time. . I'm sure there would have been less pressure on my shoulder... and probably would not have screwed things up as bad as they are... but all systems are designed for cost and designed for the average, not the extreme.

Doc, I really like the finger idea it could also be used for other things too.

1) use it to pic your nose so you dont get a boogie on your real finger.

2) Use it to flip someone the finger so if he cought me and was bigger than me than when he broke my finger it would'nt hurt.

3) would be handy incase I got a itchie bumm.

4) could also come in handy on a date, in previous dates I could have used some help.

5) seams there was something else but I cant put my finger on it.

Whitmore... nice list...

add a couple... .

flick you in the head when you start to dose off while driving...

push up your glasses... back to the proper focal point... when driving along the outer beach on a busy weekend... .
