Yup. That's a snow pad.

I only put on a handfull of those, as most of my clients were flatlanders or foothilllers that didn't live in the snow.

Did ya lay down some oakum between the foot and pad?

To be honest about it We have never done this before. This is BIL's horse and We have not done it to any of our crew. Seems like it would be like us having a rock in our shoe!! His horse walked kind of funny for just a while but got use to it. Just wanted to get your idea and do the wait and see thing before we do it. So this is not NEW??

We put the JB weld on the shoe and put in a letter of the name of the Animal to be able to track it if it should wander off but thats not any where near the size of this thing.

You ever use the equi-pak or equi-build products instead of the snow pad. It really will protect the sole and also prevent anything from getting between pad and sole.

No im not real up to date on the horse in snow stuff is all about . We were flatlanders most of the year untill hunting season and even then we didnt do that much snow. I didnt like working the gang that hard the snow and packing is a real work out for the Mules. The reason we are checking it out we got caught in a traffic jam riding the other day and the wife's horse slipped and almost sent her over the handle bars. The weather was getting bad and most of the gal's that were on the ride wanted to go home I dont know why I told the girls to cowboy up almost in unison they said that they were not equipped like cowboy's

Big, Those pads have been around for a long time. Looks funny, but the ball in the center does a pretty good job of 'poppin' the snow out.

The borium on the shoes gives some pretty good traction but care must taken if ya happen to ride the streets and such. The hoof needs to be able to give a little (slide) during it's natural locomotive forces. The borium, if applied to course can cause damage to joints, ligaments etc because it puts the brakes on those natural forces.

The Equi-pak type stuff works great if you can get the bottom of the hoof completely sterile from manure, dirt etc before it's applied. Otherwise it has tendency to fall out. Especially if the horse is used in mountain types terrains.

You can also inject that stuff between the pad and hoof instead of oakum. However, if you apply too much, it will put pressure of the coffin bone or affect the dynamics of the hoof.

Ill talk the the Niece about the Equi stuff shes the Vet. Now that I have looked at the Equi-pak web site I have seen the black stuff you would have to reapply every time you shoe or does it last that long ? We must be very fortunate we have not had to many problems with the feet or legs of our gang. Thanks for all the info

The Equi-pak products are good. I mostly used their stuff for temporary corrective shoeing. I got to work with the Master Farrier for the University of Davis for a long time (I got to aid with some really cool quine surgical procedures). We used the Equi products like candy.

Any I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER that you see that claims to harden or protect the outer hoof wall is Snake Oil. Pooring a can of beer on your animals hoof's will achieve the same.

The equi-pak products usually last from shoeing to shoeing. The mesh that you put inbetween the shoe and the foot acts like rebar in concrete and helps hold in place. I have a coulple of performance horse that are extremely thin soled that require it to keep them sound and they have not had any trouble keeping it from shoeing to shoeing but the are also not out in the mountains on trails but do see a lot of gravel. I have on old navicular brood mare that we have found particular homemade shoe that provides her the most relief but because of the amount of wedge that is built in that shoe she has to have the equipak in her to allow her to have frog and sole contact with the ground to give her natural blood flow. Hers stays in anywhere form 16-20 weeks as she is very slow grower.

I do know that when the gang is packing in the hunting season they really need attention the rocks extra weight are real hard on them.
