They have wanted one for a long time and now that Nissan is doing it, they will not let that go. But Toyota has the money to not only go with a diesel engine, but upgrade to a 3/4 ton truck if they want to.
If Toyota gets the Cummins, Nissan will not get the market share they're hoping for. Nissan probably was thinking, "sweet, we can compete with Toyota now". They'll have to bear Toyota on the price. By a substantial amount.
I remember reading an article 5 or 6 Yrs ago about a prototype Tundra that had been outfitted with a 4. 5 Liter TD Hino engine. They were supposedly testing pretty extensively but like a lot of other proto types of that era tanked.
