I replaced my t-stat about a year ago (Napa) and I think it's time again. It has been a little cold here and I can't get the CTD to warm above above 140 without the e-brake on. Any other thoughts? I don't want to spend alot on a thermostat, mostly because I don't have money.

Hi,

Same situation here. I ordered a new t-stat directly from Cummins and had it mailed to my house. I don't believe it was more than $20 total.

Good luck

Mine was cycling so i replaced it

I installed a 'Stant' 190 as it was the only 1 in stock close by
( cummins was Out of stock.
I figured I'd do the cummins later,,

Well , the Stant was a little smaller , but it is working great.
All summer, stays right on the 190 mark, just slightly higher
under heavy load, Pulling the Hill North into Henderson NC
Stayed right on 190 plus a tad, fan cycled still held the 190
And NO Cycling . Will see how long it lasts... . so far 10 months. . ok

I had issues withy my 1990, bough a new t-stat from Napa and had problems with it also. Bought another, same thing! So I started doing some checking by boiling them in water with a thermometer. All 3 opened at approx the same time, and I cycled them several times buy heating them then cooling them under cold water. What I found was dirt/rust in the pan after the test. It appears I neglected my cooling system and rust particles were being generated and causing the thermostat to stick. I cleaned the system and flushed it until the water was clean then bought a water filter from Napa and plumbed it into the system, problem solved.

I suggest that you clean your system also. Be absolutely sure you position the jiggle pin on top if there is only one so the trapped air can escape, this my take some time. Also if possible position the vehicle so that the front end is up that will help the air work out of the system.

If you have a pressure tester you can check for trapped air by pumping the system up. It should take no more than 3 or 4 pumps to build pressure, if it takes several or more pumps there is trapped air in the system that must be removed or a cracked head could result. My brother in law learned the expensive way!

Hope this helps!!!

Well, Wyoming salutations! The wind misses you!!

Got any part #'s for that t-stat?

Hi Wyomingcowboy;

Just called Cummins NW. They run $31. 50 and they are in stock. I guess I was a bit low on the price. With shipping it must have been $36. Sorry, I didn't get a part #.

Yea, I do miss the wind... not. Although we sure have had our fill out in Oregon. 100+mph on the coast with hard rains. It passed last night so I guess the storm is on its way to Wyoming. :) Enjoy my friend.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Ok, problem fixed. The old thermo was in BACKWARDS!! I am not stupid, honest. Not sure how it happened but I pulled the housing off and immediately saw the problem. I guess I was in a hurry last time??? Anyway, saved me $23 at NAPA!
