I have a 2001 24V HO that is going to be my wifes ride as soon as we sell some property. I will be looking for a 1 ton 4x4 for pulling a heavy 5th wheel. I like the 24V ISB but would like to get away from all the computers and related problems. If I could find a low mileage, cherry 98 I would probably buy it. How do the 5 speeds do compared to my 6 speed when pulling heavy loads?

What kind of horsepower is reasonable to get? I understand they fixed the front brake pull problem but the 98 would not be the newer design. What kinds of problems are "expected" with a 98 12 valve? Would I be better off with a 2001 HO 6 speed? Thanks for any input.

welcome to the dark side....NOW LEAVE BEFORE YOU GET HOOKED!!!

Do you really expect these people to say that you'd be better off with a 24v?:p ;)

If I were going to do a project truck I would do a 12v no doubt.

12 valve

I had a 96 3500 and pulled a 35 foot goose neck that weighed 8800lbs and pulled it up to AK from Tri Cities Wa. with 20,000 lbs. of hay through BC. The truck performed flawlessly. The only problem I noticed was between 2nd and 3rd gear. The gearing was a little tall between those 2 gears for starting with an extremly heavy load on a grade. I had to run the engine up to about 2500 r's to shift. When I did that, the back pressure on the exhaust system with the cat "woofed woofed" until the pressure was relieved.

The 6 speed would be nice but I wouldn't let that stop me from buying a fiver.

I have a 98 12v and I love it. If you get a 5 speed, you can expect the fifth gear nut to fail every now and then. Other problems include simplicity, better fuel milage, lift pump keeps NOT failing, the p7100 injector pump just won't break when I need it too, and CHEAP power upgrades. Damn I hate this motor. LOL Half the valves, half the trouble. ;)   :D

The way I look at it is the 12 valve B 5. 9 engine has been around for a long time and is used in many other applications besides our trucks. The 24v was forced upon Cummins by the EPA to bring down emissions otherwise I highly doubt it would have been developed since the 12v is so reliable and fuel efficent. I'd go as far as saying I'd rather have a PSD than a 24 valve.

You're a cold fella illflem. :D

TD, I would not be afraid of the 5 speed with a 12 valve. I put a plate in mine to get @290 hp, put in 4" exhaust to allow me an inline exhaust brake, and fixed my 5th gear problem (only after it let go) with the Standard Trans. shaft-gear-nut. My 2500 with 3. 54 will pull anything I hook it up to. The weak spot is between 3rd and 4th gear. I make sure and rev to @2500 before shifting into 4th gear when pulling a heavy load.

I would suggest the 4. 10 gears for any trailer over 10,000 pounds. I get by with heavier loads with my 3. 54 gears, but I also live on flat ground. Newer 12 valves all have the 60 pound exhaust springs, but if you buy an earlier model, you will need to add them to make full use of the exhaust brake.

Good luck

12V's

Well I wish I could teel you soemthing was wrong with these but I can't, I think there just a good motor. I to would like to someday have a second and it be a 3500 stick, figure this you can put a 270 plate, guages, exhaust housing(16cm), springs, a break and 3k springs(you need these) and you are set and it you were worried about it put in a southbend clutch. you will not go wrong with this truck. Welcome to the half brothers!

Jim

I think the 24V all have the 60lb springs. I have a 98 12V, and it has the standard exhaust springs.

Expected problems with a 98 12Valve..... NONE! I have 91K on mine, and the only problem I have is not being able to put all the power to the ground until I get my TC swapped out.

Texas Diesel - Ditto on the posts. To reiterate & add to them:

- Get the 5 speed & get the Std Trans fix.

- For $300 or less, you can get a plate that will over fuel almost all of the turbos avail & get you way over 400hp.

- All you need for high hp is a turbo & a plate. The 5 speed pump has plenty of bandwidth to handle the big fuel plate. I'd get those 2 items before injectors & see where you stand & what you want.

- With a huge amount of hp available, the 3rd to 4th gear spread is not an issue. Torque fixes it. :)

I love my mechanical 12 valve "locomotive" and they'll have to pry it out of my cold dead hands... I think the good old days are over and we will never see another engine like the 94 - 98. Very much like the old steam locomotives I used to love to watch as a kid.

Bill:

You just ain't right. A ford?

As for as a 12 V , my drives one and loves it. No brake problem , steers straight. rides as smooth as any vehicle I have ever driven. The only thing she has said is the leather seats are cold.

For power. forget it. You will never need more for normal towing and if so, for $600 you can fly. Then comes the clutch.

Joseph, you ever thought about putting in duel engines? That way you could have a real 24 valve;). In case no one has noticed, IMHO 24 valves are a POS. They just aren't dependable.

WOW!! That was unexpected.

Repent illflem... . REPENT!! :D

Well, the KDP issue is the only real worry to me. I'm told I have the later block, and it shouldnt be an problem.

Thanks for all the responses, I always have liked the mechanical injection pump. Guess I'll be hunting for a 98 after we sell. Sure will miss the 4 wheel disc brakes ( I think ) but the lack of a VP-44, lift pump, and 14 on board computers will be easy to say goodbye to. Sooner or later I'll be here asking dumb questions :D Thanks to all! Wonder how hard it would be to trade the manual transmissions between the two trucks?
