Thanks, TDR Staff

Is this stock?

Most important aftermarket gauge?

I just joined TDR but have been lurking in the shadows for awhile. I dont own a diesel YET but am interested in them. I was hoping to get a few questions answered to further my knowledge.

#1-What problems should I look for when buying a 12v Ram (94+)(engine,trans. ,suspension,brakes,etc. ) ?

#2-When I get one, in what order should I "bomb" it ?(gauges, exhaust, intake ???)

#3-What boost pressure do diesels generally run ?

Look forward to picking your brains !!!

Thanx in advance,

Rich

Welcome to the TDR

#1 Are you asking what combination is best? or what things to look for in the way of condition? If looking for a 12v 97 was a very good year for the 12v and truck

#2 It never hurts to have guages even if not modified at all, bombing is not for every one, some people actually like the stock power. But if you are going to, intake and exhaust mods are a good place to start.

#3 I believe most years 94-02 stock boost was 18 to 20 lbs

Good Luck finding the perfect ride for you.

Rich- 97 and 98 were probably the best 12v years. Read about "killer dowel pins", and 5th gear nut on 5 speed transmission. Auto transmission has it's issues as well, when bombing. All these subjects are in the TDR data base. Use the search engine to get volumes of info.

So ya gonna bomb it, huh? :D I think most of us started with the torque plate followed by injectors. My advice- make this a sequential process. Take care of the dowel pin, add gauges, and then the fuel. Your gauges will tell you when you need to make further modifications (EGT). Depending on where you end up, the clutch/transmission will need $ to make them happy. It's a bombing thing. If you're going to go for HIGH horsepower, pick a HP number, and research the TDR advertisers to put together a blue print and add/modify parts as you go along based on the plan.

Do get in touch with a local chapter and attend get togethers. Visit diesel shops who sell our parts and ask questions.

Welcome to the fold.

#1- If your gunna go beyong stock stay away from an auto. If ya stay stock the auto well be fine. Before you buy the truck take it to a trusted shop and have them look it over.

#2- KDP, gauges, intake, exhaust, and fuel has been/is my plan. I kind of jumped to the fuel when my injectors were rebuilt but I only went to the 215s.

#3- With the wastegate disabled on my truck I can get 26 lbs. of boost.

Keep in mind that it takes fuel to make boost, and it takes fuel to make heat as well. I can make 40 psi pretty easy in my 91, but EGT catches up quickly if I keep in it, and the transmission complains. GOing down the road empty, I run about 8-12 psi on the flat, up to 25 going up a hill. the heavier you are, the more boost you'll use to go a given speed. ALong the same lines, the faster you go, the more fuel you use at a given weight. So you'll get better mileage with 10K GCVW at 60 mph than you will with 20K at 70.

AS for BOMB order, get your airflow in/ exhaust out set up first. Better to run a little cooler (lean?) than to have to constantly remember that you cant use all your fuel due to high EGT, and run the risk of your little lady or her sister burning something up due to ignorance.
