i just bought a 1995 3500 4x4 4. 10s with the 5. 9. when first bought i couldnt get it to go past 2200and 70 mph empty and about 65 loaded total weight for car trailer and truck was 14000 pounds. i didnt know if that was right or not. but reading i thought would replace the lift pump and clean the screen in the heater. know it goes to about 2600rpm but when i first start it up it wont go past 1500 with out missing and blowing tons of white smoke out. it didnt do this before i replaced the lift pump. once i go down the road about 5 miles it clears up but still 2600 is max rpm is 2600 normal? any help would be great im new to the diesel thing.

95s dont rev high stock. mine only went to 2300 stock before it would defuel. a set of 3k governor springs will let it rev higher by allowing fuel to a higher rpm.

TMaki, welcome aboard. The white smoke is most likely due to timing. Stock on a 95, 5spd is 12. 5 deg. btc (you need to fill out your truck profile so we know what you have, auto or 5spd). Mine would do the same thing untill I advanced it to 16. 5, now no white smoke or missing when cold, and I picked up 1. 5 or so miles per gal.

If you're gonna be pulling many trailers, one of the best mods you can make is a 3k gsk (3000rpm governer spring kit for the injection pump). It'll allow you to power past the big jump between 3rd and 4th when pulling a load.

Yes, 2600 rpm is about right for a stock 95. With a 3kgsk you can see 3200.

Do a search on both subjects, lots of reading.

Good luck, RR

just ordered a overflow today. after that i am going to bump timing up. if that doest help the smoke and not being able to go above 1200 to 1500 when first started than fuel lines and gaskets i think does that sound right?

thanks for the replies

TMaki that should help. Go for about 15. 5 timing. Smoking and barking isn't too uncommon for a 12-valve, but when you first start up in the morning don't rev it up for a couple minutes, that's not the best for it. Unless the weather is pretty cold it shouldn't hardly do that at all especially after running a minute or two. Good luck, keep us posted.

even at 50 to 60 degrees i can let it run for about 15 minutes and its still doesnt rev up with out missing and blowing white smoke its as soon as i drive it about 5 miles that it totaly clears up

thanks

sounds like something i'm going through right now. a noticable drop in power and a lot of white smoke when first started. found that my overflow valve needed replacing and that my #1 injector wasn't acting right. if u have access to an infared thermo gun do a heat check on the exhaust manifold. this will point out a troubled injector.

Mostly the timing on the white smoke part, it could be overflow valve but I'd try the timing first since it's a BOMB you'll want down the road anyway. I have the same problem it belches white smoke until about 5 miles or so, the higher you rev it the worse it is. I found the problem got way worse with the 300 injectors though.

What really makes it sound like timing is your upper RPM lack of power. The stock governer springs start to pull the rack back and defuel at 2200 but it should still go until atleast 2600 before completely shutting down. But yeah a 3K GSK and timing to 16 or so will fix that all that up in a hurry unless the overflow valve is playing some tricks too but I doubt it.

I don't see if the truck is auto or stick. My 2nd Gen was a 5spd. The auto's don't rev as well. I did a GSK 3k(governor spring kit). This allows the pump to roar to 3200rpm. My 2nd Gen also had some white smoke and low power when I bought it. Problem was the fuel supply/return lines and the soft line from the fuel preheater to lift pump. The lift pump soft line was the definite problem.

Diesel fuel lines can dry rot. They leak air into the system, but will not leak fuel out.

In addition to the timing as mentioned by others I also replaced the fuel preheater filter and gaskets. Filter and gaskets from Mopar are about $40. Same parts from Cummins about $15.

Cummins didn't have the strainer kit for some reason, couldn't even order it. So I had to pay $40 from the dodge dealer.

Does this truck still have a cat on it? My 95 was a dog too, the 160/175 trucks really need mods because they go nowhere stock.

thanks guys for the replys it is a 5speed and it still has the cat on it i was thinking of putting 4 inch exhaust on it and remove the cat.

Exhaust doesn't do much for power, since you have a cat you might get 10 HP out of it and slightly faster turbo spoolup. Modifying the torque plate really sets these trucks off, biggest bang for the buck hands down. But make sure you have boost and EGT gauges first!

Taking the cat off certainly helps if its plugged up!
