I'm expecting my new Comp to be here on Monday and was hoping to hear from some of you with a little seat time with it. I've done some searching and didn't find exactly what I'm looking for.

First, this Comp is coming to me by way of a very cheap upgrade from Edge. I had an EZ that completely failed and they offered the Comp upgrade at a very reasonable price. My truck is bone stock except for straight exhaust and a drop in AFE filter. I do tow a good size fifth wheel and that's why I bought the EZ in the first place. I do have boost, pyro and fp gauges.

Should I even tap the pump? If I do, what would be the "safe" range with the Comp? Edge recommended anywhere from 1x5 to 2x3. Would short bursts at higher levels be ok(i. e. smoking my boss's 6. 0 PS)?

Thanks,

Ian

Ian,

My truck had TST injectors (don't ask which level) before the Edge Comp so comparisons may not be identical.

I could run my Comp box on 3x3 without getting high EGT's, but anything above that would result in EGT's approaching 1350 with heavy throttle. Edge STRONGLY urges users of the Comp box to install gauges and so do I. I see you have a pyrometer. Keep the EGT below 1300 degrees or so and you should be okay.

I ran on #1x3 when I was empty, about 75% of the time. The only time I switched to #3 was when I was towing. I found that I had adequate power on #1.

I was seeking a timing change for better fuel mileage when I bought the box. I had intended to get the Easy, but went with the Comp when it was on sale.

Watch that EGT gauge and then you'll know exactly where you can run that box.

Good luck,

Loren

Most of us have learned the $1200 hard way. Get a fuel system on your rig before installing a wire tap box or your vp44 will die!

I run the comp all the time on 1X1 and it gives me all I need I have not hooked up the wire as not needed unless I want to add a new clutch. I can slip the clutch and 60 65mph if i dont watch it. I am basically stock except for 4" exh and FASS ;pump. I get 2 - 3 mpg better with the comp. I pull 4horse trlr and also a 30ft TT. and there are lots of hills in this Idaho country and I have all the power this old Fart needs.

Your stock clutch will stand up to too much extra power.

I have be running my Comp without tap for three years. I set it up 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 so as I set the main level (which is not doing anything) I am changing the sub-levels. At sub-level three, fueling as about at stock boost levels, at sub-level one fuel is delayed from stock, and at sub-level 5 fueling is before stock level. I run on sub-level three 99 percent of the time, and if a ricer gets beside me, I can pop up to level 5 and create a little smoke screen to sneak away in.

If you are on your original VP44, it may die within minutes of tapping!!! Some do, some do not.

I thought I read that if the pump is NOT tapped, it acts like an EZ and the levels don't change anything.

Now I'm confused again.

The power levels don't change anything without the tap, but the SUB levels do. Every power level will output the same as the EZ, but you can still control the fueling vs. boost (smoke) with the subs.

Correct, sub levels are more difficult to change that main levels. You have to go into step up. The way I noted above, you can effect the sub-levels in the EZ mode by pushing the up or down buttons for main levels, and you are really only changing sub-levels. SNOKING

Now I get it. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

UPS still hasn't shown up today. They're probably freaking out like everyone else around here b/c of the weather.

Thanks again, I doubt I'll tap the pump anytime soon.

I installed my comp with approx 50k on the engine. At first I did not tap the wire to the IP. I finally decided what the heck and tapped away. I now have 80k and the original IP. What a differance between tapped and not. You can really tell the differance. I had to replace the clutch shortly after but it had slipped once before mods. All I can say is yes it's a risk to tap or not. Don't tap if you can't afford a new IP if it does fail.

My EZ died as well and I changed to a Comp. A FASS 95 will give you the fuel your going to need. Even in stock mode I could make my low fuel pressure light flicker at 2000 rpm's with the OE lift pump. The power gain over 2000 rpm's is incredible with the FASS. I use a Smarty on level 9 for towing and the Smarty on level 8 plus the Comp on 5 for going like a bat out of hell. Be careful power is addictive. My EZ\4" Exhaust\AFE original investment of $1000 has snow balled into another $10K. Now I'm getting a craving for stacks!

UPS finally showed up.

And I did not tap the pump. Didn't really get to test it out yet due to the ice around here(N. E. Okla).

Thanks for everyone's input. Maybe a FASS after the holidays and then I'll tap the pump.
