I just bought a 98' 2500 4X4 12'er with an auto, and am having several problems in the transmission. The truck has 168k miles, and is in very clean condition.

When I take off from a stop with the shift lever in the OD position, it will only hold 1st gear til about 3-4mph, then shift past second into 3rd. I can manually pull the lever into low and 2nd, and it shifts great. I crawled around under the truck yesterday, and found the kickdown cable that attaches to the throttle lever on the pump was just hanging there. Re-attached it with no luck. Where should I look next to get the transmission shifting properly? I plan on taking it to get the line pressures checked on monday. The transmission also has a Transgo (?) shift kit installed.

Thanks for the help!

I looked in 96 service manual trouble shooting guide for auto transmissions and didn't find anything you described.

I would get your TDR magazine out look up the after market transmission outfits and call/e-mail one of them. They are usually very helpful! DTT,ATS and Suncoast would be a few names. Goerend takes a while to get back to you. But take your pick from the mag.

On further research of service manual the throttle valve cable and front band mite need adjusting but that's just a guess.

Throttle valve cable can cause quick shifts if cable is to short. Front band misadjustment could keep trans from shifting in to 2nd. But it should have problems with overdrive on or off.

Check the throttle cable adjustment. At full throttle position, you should have about 1/16 to 1/8 inch of travel left on the throttle valve lever at the transmission end.

This is a correction to my earlier statement that called for the measurement being made at closed throttle.
