newbie to diesel.. not to dodge

cold start

I recently purchased a 2000 3500 QC 4x4 8' bed w/130000 miles.

I have noticed that I am getting some oil on the ground at my parking spot at the office. Is this similar to the old leaking Harleys and expected, ie Cummins Class?

Any clues how I would determine what tsb's have been performed on this truck?

It seems that the fuel milage is a little low, I get about 14 MPG unloaded and 11 pulling my 24' TT. What should I look at first?

Thanks

Chad

Chad,

If that oil spot is up front and sort of on the driver's side, it is probably oil dripping from the breather hose. This hose is on the front of the engine and the drips are normal. The hose will be hanging down from a round "can" about 2" wide and about 3" in diameter.

If this is the Crankcase Breather Vapor Canister, I have found it in my service manual and will take a look at it tonight.

Thanks

The leak could be from the vacuum pump if that is the case you can get a rebuild kit directly from Cummins at the best price. Vacuum Pump Search . Here is a thread I had on the subject My Vacuum Pump Thread Of course it could be the breather like was already said

As for the mileage tell us more, 4x4, auto/manual, 4. 10 or 3. 55, quad cab? If you are a 4x4 quad cab auto with 4. 10's that's probably close to the top for mileage. If you search around you will find the biggest mileage reducer to be speed. The truck in my signature consistantly gets 16 mpg at 73 mph going back and forth to work 100 miles round trip. If I slow down to 65 mph I'll get 19 mpg. Funny thing happened though on the trip to Muncie this year, I was traveling with some animals going 80-85 mph most of the time and I got a solid 18 mpg. Maybe it was better fuel in the midwest, maybe it was the draft, or maybe it was the constant speed with no stops. My comp was on 5x5 the whole way, maybe without the stop and go traffic the comp helped my mileage. By the way I used to get 14 mpg towing my 26' TT through the New Hampshire mountains, my lowest tank ever was mostly plowing snow and was 11. 5 mpg. If your truck is set up like mine then your mileage is low and I would change out the intake temperature sensor first and then go from there.

The oil looks like it is coming from an overflow/vent hole on the canister.

It's a 4x4, auto, 3. 55 quad cab. The huge majority of my daily miles range from 35 - 55 mph, 50 miles/day.

Thanks for the help

Chad,

You're welcome, anytime. Enjoy that truck.

Forgot about your question about the tsb's. Find out who the dealer is, they will have records on what tsb's have been performed. They are supposed to put a sticker on the front radiator support when a tsb is done. I have had two done and no stickers, but they are on the service order.
