My truck is an '03 SO with NV4500, 48000 miles. Smarty is an SO4A with the 307b program.

First off I got some baseline readings with my EZ by itself, and some readings stock, except FASS. I just made some full throttle runs in overdrive 5th, on flat highway.

Stock=

Boost 27, EGT 950, FP 15. 5psi

EZ by itself on level 3=

Boost 34. 5, EGT 1050, FP 15

Smarty by itself=

SW1 30 horse= Boost 30, EGT 1100, FP 14

SW3 60 horse= Boost 31, EGT 1100, FP 14

SW5 90 horse= Boost 31, EGT 1250, FP 14

Smarty + EZ on level 1=

SW3 60 horse= Boost 31, EGT 975, FP 14. 5

Using the EZ with the Smarty gave me more of a power boost then I thought it would. Running with EZ on level 1 + the Smarty on SW3 felt stronger than running Smarty by itself on SW5. Plus it was cooler EGT's. Very fun !! I've got friends with Powerstrokes and D-maxs, it will be fun to run them on the highway. Theirs are all auto's so I don't think I have much chance from a dead stop.

Here are my questions. Why does it seem that I'm limited to 31 psi boost with the Smarty on ? It definately pulls a lot harder with Smarty and EZ than it does with just EZ.

Later next summer I will be getting a turbo and a clutch, do I need to start thinking about head studs, heavier duty valve springs, possibly fire ring head, or anything else that will allow me to reliably use as much as Smarty can give me ?

Sorry for the extra long post.

Jeff

* EDIT * Sorry, thought I was in the engine and transmission forum, please move.

Nobody has any ideas, on these questions ?

you will need to go update your software to a boost fooling configuration.

the new softwares are 309D and software ______. _____

I would think that when I run the Smarty with the EZ, that the EZ would handle boost fooling. Even when I had the EZ on, I was still only able to hit 31 psi. Which may not be a problem, because it felt really strong, and the EGT's were in good shape with the EZ on level 1 and Smarty on SW3.

As far as updating my Smarty to 309D, is boost fooling the only benefit I will get out of that? Other than any Chrysler updates, I guess.

So your saying that the turbo does not need to be mod'ed to allow the waste gate hold more PSI in an '03? Its all controled in the software?

I thought that the fooler just allowed different readings to be given to the ECU? and that the wastegate was opened by a physical pressure line from after the compressor?

Boost is a function of restriction. Your elbow should be adjustable? If you had a 4. 5 or later then you would be looking at disabling the wastegate, altering it electronicaly, or installing a boost elbow to alter the restriction.

So. . it is not under software control, but the hardware configuration of the turbo assembly. (boost elbow, ect). ?

At least that would explain why the earleyer trucks with about 30psi boost stock waste gates would not be able to get the bigger HP numbers that the later trucks with 40 or so PSI stock gate pressure would make using the top Smarty program.

The smarty software does not control the opening of the wastegate in these trucks, so it can't raise the pressure by itself. (probably you wouldn't want to with a stock turbo anyway. . as the IAT would shoot up and compressor efficencys would drop and things could get bad. . )

I'm using the boost elbow that came with my Edge EZ. That's why I'm thinking the Edge with the boost elbow should handle the boost fooling and keeping the waste gate closed with the elbow.

Don't forget guys that you still have defueling figures in the ecm of you truck. Atleast with my 2nd gen I know that my smarty didn't completely eliminate mine. I could only drive my stock charger to 30-32lbs. My commander did take the defueler settings out and now I can (NOT THAT I DO OFTEN FOR OBVIOUS REASONS) drive a stock charger to 42lbs with my edge and smarty combinations.
