Ball Bearing Turbo from Garrett!!!

It was a long weekend waiting for my username info. I am looking for some opinions on Banks, Edge, and TST products for my 3rd gen. 2500 4x4 with the 325/600 engine. I need to keep the truck safe and reliable for my wife to tow her horse trailer but also want something to play with. The truck is an automatic with 21k on it but doesn't get driven everyday any longer. I am looking to improve the intake, exhaust, and also install a controller from one of the above companies. Thanks for the help!

Banks- avoid

TST-- very powerful, no pressure, must be respected. Known to blow turbos if not respected

Edge-- decent, but unreliable. If you get an EZ, keep it at 2 or lower to avoid injector damage

Look at how a box makes power-- Timing? Duration? Pressure? Timing and duration are your friends. Pressure can damage the injectors if run too high. You MAY get better mpg with a slight amount of pressure.

For *my* money, I'd go TST.

jmo as a 2nd gen guy with the crappier, less advanced VP44.

First congrats and welcome to TDR.

A lot of the guys who tow speak highly of the Van Aaken. If you're gonna start playing you will want to consider beefing up the automatic. General consensus is that the auto's will take stock power, but will hold up much better when beefed up.

You NEED gauges, not want, but need them since you tow and you're going to add power. I suggest EGT, Boost and Trans temp. My truck is stock and I can hit 1400 degrees towing very easily.

Use the search feature on the site, you'll find tons of threads about the various brands you mentioned as well as lots of discussions on what to do w/ the auto.

Good luck and enjoy,

Jay

Thanks for the input, I ordered a TST Powermax and Afe Stage 2 yesterday. I have boost and fuel gauges left over from one of the cars, and the TST unit monitors EGT and can lower the default code to be safe. Also, I am unsure of what to do as far as exhaust since the 2004. 5 is 4" from turbo down. Should I replace the muffler to help with EGT temps or is a cat back in order? I will be careful with the settings when towing, but a converter and valve body is in the very near future. Thanks again!! Neil

Neil, general consensus is that on the 04. 5 and newer trucks is that the muffler is the biggest restriction. A lot of guys just change the muffler. The issue you may have is that changing the muffler when the truck is used for towing can cause the truck to "drone" removing the cat makes it worse. I can't recall if anyone has posted about any cat back systems that do not cause drone. I know myself and several others are all waiting for someone to find the magic muffler that will not drone while towing, but also flow better to lower egt's. When someone finds this muffler I will add one to my truck. I think you'll be happy with the TST, everyone seems to really like them. Are you installing it yourself? If so please share your experience installing the cam position sensor. I hear they are ahh "difficult"

I hope your gauges go to 50 - 60PSI as you can hit 35+ stock.

If the TST monitors EGT's, it will also moniter boost, but only to 45psi? It has to do with the MAP sensor not reading pressures over 45psi.

Probably not legally... . :-laf :-laf :-laf :-laf

As to the Rokktech "Silent Might" muffler. It looks promising, but I'm waiting for someone who's bought one to tow with it and say conclusfelly that it does not drone while towing. I have not seen any posts to that effect yet.
