newbie wandering through

Just purchased a 2001 Quad cab 4x4 87,000 mi. What is the proper procedure for changing a fuel filter and eliminate air in the system?

I also beleive I am still on the original lift pump, what is the indication when it is going out? Should I get a fuel pressure gauge? If it went out does it take anything with it like the injector pump or? I plan on keeping this stock. After reading a few threads it sounds like there is a whole lot of things wrong with these trucks. Thanks!

Fuel pressure guage is a must, a dead or dying LP will cause the death of the VP44 if not fixed and the truck is driven long enuff due to lack of sufficient fuel to keep it cool as well as the VP44 having to pull the fuel from the tank. When my LP went belly up the truck still ran like normal until I tried to floor it then it would just die or stutter. You will know the feeling when it goes it feels like the truck is starving for fuel.

Another suggestion is to get a big line kit to replace the banjos and the small fuel line from the filter to the VP44. Also get a LP relocation kit as well to get the LP as close to the tank as you can. The LP will live longer as a pusher pump instead of a puller. There are alot of 99-02 owners that have made these mods with great success.

As far as changing the fuel filter it is very simple. What I usually do after changing it is, leave the fuel water drain open and crack the supply line to the VP44. Bump the starter to get the LP running to bleed the system then close the water drain valve then the supply to the VP44. Most times it starts with the first try and sometimes it takes two attempts to get it running. There are varying techniques on bleeding the system that everyone uses and this way works real well for me.

Genos Garage sells a LP relocation kit as well as other vendors here and the big line kit is offered as well here on the TDR.
