Just purchased a new TSC below rail box and concerned about proper mounting. They give you 4 self drilling screws for straight into the bed and double sided foam tape for underneath the tool box to help absorb bumps I guess. Have Linex applied. Is there perhaps a better way or is drilling into the bed just inevitible. (sic). Thanks, Bob C

I have put two metal screws in every tool box I've had, including present. A few tools like tire chains, sockets, etc and it's so heavy there is no movement. Doc

Look in your owners manual or do a search for box brackets or reinforcements. They are required if you add a tool box to keep the bed from cracking.

You may consider using J bolts for mounting. The J bold hooks under the lip of the bed side rail and tightens inside the box. That way you don't have to penetrate the top of the rail with the bolt. Most box dealers, cap installers will give you four for nothing.

I just mounted my toolbox. I agree with Alan - use J hook bolts. That way you only drill holes in the tool box. I used the L bracket braces and the fancy J hooks from the Mopar tool box mounting kit. Besides bracing the side rails to the front rail of the bed, the L brackets provided additional meat for the J hooks. Unfortunately, you will need to drill holes in the rails for the L brackets.

Just as a point of information... He stated UNDER RAIL box. I would say that the self tapping screws should be fine, but I would get some about 1/8" longer and add some rubber "camper seal" to add a but more protection to the Line-X. The company I used to work for regularly mount small gang boxes in the company pickups and never had any problems. The only other idea I would concider would be to drill the hole out to 1/4-20, and use silicone to make a watertight seal between the box and truck to see that water doesn't get between the Line-X, and the bed in any way. Good luck with your project.

This means that I should be reading the initial post more carefully. Thanks for pointing that out before the thread got carried away.

i have a trailer rail box that i am using as a in bed box. i bolted two 1/4 inch bolts through the bed and then 4 self tap screws for aluminum siding with the rubber gromet to seal everything off. i used silicone on the two in the floor. both sides along with on the threads. then i safety wired the castle nuts on the bolts. covered it all in silicone. i have a arma coated bed and put nothing down on the bed. my bed needs re sprayed so when it coems out the box will get sprayed as well inside and out. but spereatly from the truck.

Thanks guys, I think I can pretty well get it done now about the best way possible from what you've given me. Just waiting for Geno's Agri-cover to arrive that I ordered a couple days ago and get it installed so that I can get everything to line up and fit properly. Pretty sharp testruab, thanks. Bob C

I have a low-profile 5th-wheel box that I mount at the aft end of the bed when towing. I put two 1/4" riv-nuts in the bed sheet-metal, and just use machine screws to bolt the box in when I use it. When it's out, I still have a nice flush bed floor, and I never have to crawl under the bed or worry about sheet-metal screws.
