HeberRam's Idle!

My truck has a 4 speed automatic with quite a bit done to the truck, see my signature for examples. I believe the transmission is a 47 re, please correct me if I am wrong. My problem is that the converter slips between 50- 60 mph if I put my fgoot in it to much. My question is would a better tourque converter help my problem, or should I just keep my foot out of it and save up for a whole newtranny. :--) A buddy told me about a place called edge racing converters, and I talked with a guy there, and they sell a fully brazed converter w/ a billet cover for $595. 00 , I know this is a whole lot cheaper than BD or some of the other guyz, I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about these guyz before I spend all this money. Thanks a lot in advance.

The companies that guys talk about in here are tried and true. I haven't heard of the company you are talking about, but it sounds like a "cheep" converter. You get what you pay for with these trucks. Your better off paying a bit more and not having to worry about it again! I'm working on putting a Suncoast converter in my truck. I haven't heard anything bad about the companies talked about on here. I'd say do a Search and some research. You'll be happy you did!

Travis, up yor line pressures and put a converter unlock/stock switch to hold everything together. one quick slip wont really hurt the transmission, but constantly doing it in a constant manner will ruin the transmission.

Your best bet is to increase the line pressure, change fluid and filter, adjust the bands and Pray. Once the TC slips it warps the housing and with less friction area it will slip even easier. Now save your pennies as fast as possible for a complete new unit that will hold now and in the future.

Since your trans was healthy until recently, I would do the torque converter and what ever mods to the valve body the converter manufacturer recommends. Brazed fins and a billet cover wouldn't affect the slip you have now.

I recommend Goerends. But, like JoshPeters stated above, do some research. CALL THEM, talk to them and go with the one you think will get the job done for you.

I also recommend talking to the auto transmission Guru

shoot me a PM if you want his name

How many miles do you have on your transmission?

If it is slipping like that the Torque Converter Clutch is overheating and you run the danger of the TC Clutch burning and degrading. That will send little bits of burned clutch material into the rest of the trans. And that will ruin your day every time!

However, if you have a relatively low-mileage transmission just a new Torque Converter and Valve body will fixyou up AND make it last a lot longer.

I got my transmission completely upgraded at 107,000 miles because I didn't want it to go out on a trip and have to settle for a "joe blow" trans rebuild. It is the BEST thing I ever did to my truck. It makes it scoot right off the line. Lockup is firm and quick, and the TC won't slip I don't care how much torque and H. P. you put through it.
