Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) sputtering while motor is cold??

I just had a new crate trans put in my 95. The idle rpm in park is 1100, about 1000 in drive and 800 or so with the A/C on. Somtimes at a stop while in drive with the air on the engine will try to stall if I don't ease up to a light. It seems to be getting better, I've got about 120 miles on the new trans.

The numbers don't make since! You should have a bigger drop in gear than the A/C.

You might have to put one more click on each Gov spring and turn the idle down to compensate for the additional load of a real converter.

When it doesen't bog, the rpm settles at 800 or so and stays steady. But, isn't 1100 rpm in park too high? Is there a info source on the GSK? My install info came from Piers, didn't come with a trouble shooting guide??

I thought my little 160 pump wouldn't be such a beast. I've got some serious heat now. With the 370's, 191 DV's and the 3K GSK, the 62/14 doesn't clean up the smoke as quick as expected. My EGT's and Boost guage needles move very fast. Are my mods giving me a weak idle? I figure I should go to a #10 plate so I can use more than half throttle? Would that have any effect on the idle too? I've made so many changes I'm not sure whats causing the idle problem, the 3K GSK and the trans were done at the same time by the trans installer. I wish I had held off on the GSK now. .

Your install is fine, 12V's are just a different anamal and need some tweaks, it took me years to learn them.

Well the idle was smooth on my way to work this morning, I would say its holding at least 800 rpm in drive with the ac on when I pull up to a stop light. In park its a steady 1100 rpm. Its smooth up there, no stumble. I do need a bit of throttle to start it. I better leave it alone for a while and see if it will settle in. The GSK is only two days old, I just need to get the smoke under control. :D

The 62/14 turbo is not keeping up till its over 25 psi, I'm surprised at how easy I can roll the coal out.

Sounds like the AFC is not setup correctly, that's why it smokes so much on the bottom.

Having to touch the throttle to get it start is the clearest example that it needs another click on the springs.

I backed the star wheel off and its much better off the line. My main problem is I'm over fueled a bunch. My tail gate is getting a good coating of diesel. I'm not burning all my fuel on the highway. I'm getting a good haze running 75 mph at 5 to 10 psi of boost. If I nail it, the smoke is a bit much. It does clear some but, it smokes like a coal train. I've lost 2 mpg and its very fast on the top end, 90 mph comes quick. The 191 DV's are really dumping the

fuel.

So the pedal to start is a GSK issue, I'll try another click. Will sliding the 6 plate back be enough to cut the fuel shower to a resonable level? Or should I go to a milder 10 plate? How would you go about cutting the fuel down with my set up? Right now I have almost instant spool up with my 62/14, its too quick actually. It will hit 40 psi very quickly, its very aggressive and fun, a bit too much.

Pull the 191's out and keep them, install a set of 181's

Star Wheel: Adds tension to the AFC spring... ... . that's it! If it's too tight it will limit full travel.

Do a search for AFC mods in the 12V forms! Look at the competitiondiesel.com forms also.

I know I'm pulling up an old thread, but this caught my eye. I am having issues with the idle as well. I installed a set of 3KGSK's, and the truck now idles around 1000 in park, and 800ish with a/c and drive.

Jim, I was wondering if you could elaborate a little on the GSK adjustments to sliminate some of the pedal to start issues I have like mentioned above.

thanks

Corey
